To begin the day, Panola of Carthage tripped the Temple Junior ollege Leopards 9-6 at Kyle Field vith a 14-hit attack. The game pit ted the North Zone winner (Panola) md the South Zone winner (Tem ple) of Region XIV. Panola jumped to a 3-0 lead in the irst inning off Temple starter Mark Tedford, the game’s losing pitcher. The game marked the first career loss for the sophomore from San An tonio Churchill. He had won both bis starts last year and was 4-0 this ason. The Leopards came roaring back with four runs in the third but to no avail as Panola scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a commanding 8-4 lead. Leftfielder David Mire’s fourth inning three- run home run highlighted the spree. TJC scored two more runs in the bottom half of the eighth but was too late. David Pieczyneki was the win ning pitcher but needed help in the eighth. Panola’s Winston Whiddon contributed four hits including a triple and a double, while Temple’s Steve Deskin, Glenn Wendt and Jerry Jones collected two hits apiece. Meanwhile at Bryan's Travis Park, the Ravens of San Jacinto downed Angelina College of Lufkin 4-0 on the four-hit pitching of David Brisky. The Ravens took off to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on M ike Kane’s single and Steve Ramsey’s double. An out followed along with a two- run double off the bat of Crockett Dubose, who was 2 for 3 on the day. SJC added an insurance run in tbe fourth on Paul Montalbano’s single followed by a stolen base, passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Ramsey. The action was climaxed at Kyle Field as the loser of the first game, Temple, lost a heart breaker to the winner of the second game, San Jacinto, 3-0. Mark McClain of San Jac and Chris Kies of TJC locked horns in a scoreless pitchers dual, which lasted nine innings. McClain then had to be replaced in the ninth but Kies lasted the distance allowing eight San Jac hits in 11 innings. TJC stranded runners on second and third in both the ninth and tenth innings and had men on first Tracksters to journey to Austin By PAUL McGRATH Managing Editor The scheduled dual meet with the Baylor Bears has been canceled due to construction underway on the Kyle Field infield. However, the Aggie tracksters of Coach Charles Thomas will com pete on Saturday in Austin in an invitational pickup meet open to any school willing to come. A&M is in the midst of a two week layoff period as the last competition for the entire team was May 3 also in Austin. Several Aggies traveled to Houston’s Meet of Champions but the majority of the squad stayed in Aggieland for a much needed rest. This week’s meet will have the hosting University of Texas fielding their entire team in hopes to avenge an earlier defeat on their home ground at the hands of the Aggies. The list of other competing schools is yet unknown but most SWC schools will be there. There is a possibility that the meet will not be scored as it is simply a pickup meet. Thomas will be returning to the state capitol for the second weekend in a row as he was busy scouting last Saturday’s state high school meet. Several top A&M recruiting pro spects performed well at the meet. Bill Wimberly from Fort Worth won the high jump over the favorite Greg Lambdin of Galveston Ball with a leap over 6-10. Odessa’s Tommy Glass turned in a 1.53.2 880-yard dash to place in that event. He went into the meet as the state’s top half-miler. Glass has already signed to come to A&M. The Aggies follow Saturday's meet with a week of rest before competing in perhaps their most climatic meet of the year — the Southwest Conference champion ship Track Meet. The Aggies were a surprise second last year and hope to tie or better that finish this year. Lubbock will be the site of the SWC cinder showdown with the preliminaries beginning May 23. The Aggies will travel by plane to West Texas, leaving on Thursday. and second when the game finally ended. Dan Moran led off the eleventh inning for the Ravens with a single to right field. Don Fry followed with a bunt single, as the throw was late to second for the force. Mike Wat son grounded out pitcher to first which moved the runners up one base each. Duane Bagley then walked, and Chuck Lamar (replac ing starting third baseman Darrel Reaves) singled to center, scoring Morgan from third. Montalbano safety squeezed Fry across the plate and was safe at first as the throw arrived late, and the score stood at 2-0. Designated hitter Mike Kane singled to center apparently scoring Bagley and Lamar. Bagley scored but the umpires ruled Lamar failed to touch third base and was called out as Kies threw to third baseman Deskin for the putout. TJC then came up in the bottom half of the inning, led off by Ramsey’s fly out to left, Manny Or- dones’ single and Roger Pierce’s base-on-balls. The Ravens then pul led Porter, who replaced McClain in the ninth, and brought in ace Rodney Ramsey. Hegot Jerry John son to pop to short and struck out Buddy Grobe, who was previously 3 for 4. San Jacinto Panola meet today for the Region XIV Championship with the winner moving on to play the winner of Region V, Ranger Junior College.
