Anderson was traded to the, Dolphins by the St. Louis Cardi nals for Miami wide receiver Mar lin Briscoe and running back Hubert Ginn. “We plan to use Donny in the Jim Kiick situations,” said Shula, faced with rebuilding his once- powerful backfield after one of the most celebrated jumps in pro football history. Kiick, a running back, fullback Larry Csonka and wide receiver Paul Warfield left the Dolphins at the end of last season to fulfill a $3 million-plus contract with the World Football League’s Memphis Southmen. “We plan to use him (Ander son) in the passing situations. He’s caught a lot of passes coming out of the backfield,” Shula said. “He’s probably more of a half back but he can play fullback. We’ll give him a chance to fit into our program.” By mentioning Kiick’s name, Shula seemed to be making it easy for those interested to distinguish just what pair of shoes he would like Anderson to fill. But he said Anderson also would be given a chance to show his ability as a power runner. The Dolphins’ backfield still boasts one of the NFL’s most ex citing speedsters, Mercury Morris, and creditable performers Benny Malone and Don Nottingham. Anderson joined the Cardinals in 1972 after six years with the Green Bay Packers. He led St. Louis in rushing 679 yards, pass receptions 41 and touchdowns 13 in 1973. In his career, Anderson has averaged just under four yards a carry while catching 209 passes for 2,548 yards. The Cardinals, already blessed with a talented receiving corps, gain the considerable talents of Briscoe, who in 1973 led the Dol phins in pass-catching. But after starting 1974 with a flourish—a Dolphin-record nine re ceptions on opening day against New England—Briscoe was hob bled by a hamstring for the rest of the season and managed just two more receptions in limited action. Ginn, originally drafted by the Dolphins, then traded to the Balti more Colts and taken back by Miami as a free agent, served chiefly as a special teams member last year. SF hurler puts quietus on Braves ATLANTA (AP) - Rookie Pete Falcone, making only his fifth major league start, held At lanta hitless for six innings and combined with Randy Moffitt on a three-hitter as the San Francisco Giants downed the Braves 7-1 Tuesday night. Falcone, a 21-year-old left hander who pitched his way onto the Giants’ roster during baseball’s spring training, flirted with a no hitter until Dusty Baker opened the Atlanta seventh with a ground ball single between first and sec ond. Falcone, 3-1, was lifted for a pinch hitter in the ninth after allowing one more hit. The Braves scored an unearned run in the eighth. Larvell Blanks drew a leadoff walk, pinch hitter Rod Gilbreath singled and the bases were loaded when second baseman Derrel Thomas dropped Ralph Garr’s pop fly. Marty Perez grounded to third baseman Steve Ontiveros who started a double play via the plate, but Gilbreath was waved home when Falcone committed a balk. Chris Speier belted his first home run of the season in the fourth inning off loser Buzz Capra. The Giants scored two un earned runs in the third on walks to Dave Rader and Thomas, a sin gle to Von Joshua which loaded the bases and a two-run error by Atlanta first baseman Earl Wil liams, who booted Bobby Mur- cer’s grounder. Thomas singled home Joshua, who walked and stole second, in the fifth inning and the Giants scored three times off Gary Gen try in the ninth, two on Bobby Murcer’s bases-loaded single.
