Two experts on artificial islands
from the Texas A&M University
staff will be featured Monday at the
Seventh Annual Offshore Technol
ogy Conference in Houston.
Daniel Bragg and Norman C.
Whitehorn, both of the Industrial
Economics Research Division, will
discuss the islands as a possible solu
tion to industry expansion.
Activities analyzed in the study
include oil refining, petrochemical
manufacturing, electric power gen
eration, paper-making, iron and
steel production, nuclear fuel pro
cessing, deepwater ports, and re
creation.
Offshore island industry could re
lieve the impact of refining emis
sions on nearby areas as well as any
hazards of nuclear power plants, ac
cording to Bragg and Whitehorn.
AUSTIN (AP) — A retired judge
said Thursday he has denied Texas
International Airlines’ request for
an injunction to stop Southwest Air
lines’ flights to the Lower Rio
Grande Valley.
Retired State Dist. Court Judge
Wilmer Hunt said his formal order
will be signed in the next couple of
days.
Texas International was seeking a
temporary restraining order to halt
Southwest’s service between Hous
ton, Dallas and San Antonio and the
Valley.
The Texas Aeronautics Commis
sion approved the flights Feb. 6,
and Southwest began flying into the
Valley Feb. 11.
Hunt heard two days of testimony
last month before asking the attor
neys involved to submit written
briefs.
James Wilson, a lawyer for Texas
International, argued before Hunt
that because of the TAC’s ruling
“Texas International is obviously
being deprived of a substantial mar
ket at this time.”
Herbert Kelleher, Southwest’s
general counsel, said Texas Interna
tional had violated a pledge that it
would not try to stop Southwest’s
Valley flights as long as an appeal
from the TAG decision was in effect.
Wilson said changing conditions
in the Valley made it necessary for
Texas International to seek court ac
tion.
