Scavenger hunt Officers find bones Page 4 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 1975 BATTALION CLASSIFIED SAN ANTONIO, Tex. (AP) — Sheriffs deputies and Texas Ran gers conducted a grim scavenger hunt Thursday for human bones, locating 44 bones at a lake’s edge where the decomposed body of a woman and other skeletal remains were found the day before. Sheriffs Lt. Alfred Carreon said he found what he believed may be bones of five women or young girls. Carreon said, however, that many of the bleached bones may be those of animals. “I don’t think we’ve got another Houston mass murders case on our hands,” said Chief Deputy Rudy Garza. “A lot of these bones are real old and dry. They may have washed out of an old cemetery. I just don’t know yet. We haven’t had any rash of missing women in the past.’ About 20 officers rustling through head-high weeds and brush found two pairs of women’s shoes, a tom orange dress and what appeared to be the remains of a gray and white blouse or shirt. One pair of shoes was a silver platform style. About 30 Civil Defense workers manned boats to scour the Churchill Estates Lake in east Bexar County where the first discovery was made Wednesday by a fisherman. Carreon said the man stumbled across die leg of a woman near the lake’s edge and then found her nude, decomposing corpse. Sheriff s officers found a number of bones strewn around the area. One newsman picked up a small bone deputies identified as a human finger. County Medical Examiner Dr. Reuben Santos said he could not de termine at once how the victims died. “Most probably it was not natural, ” he said. He said the skele ton appeared to be that of a woman 20-25 years old while the decom posed body was that of a Caucasian girl 13-14 years old who weighed 100 pounds and had long, brown hair. The lake is a 20-acre body of water created by a conservation dam. It is ringed by scrub oak, mesquite and high weeds, an area studded with discarded refrigerators, tires, and other junk. One man living in the area said he had noticed buzzards circling the area in recent weeks but attached no significance to them since the sec tion is grazed by cattle. The area is somewhat south of a site where Sandra Wooten Everly, 29, was found dead last month. In vestigators said Miss Everly had been raped and choked to death. Hansen seeks alternative WASHINGTON (AP) — Prison doors have not slammed shut be hind Rep. George Hansen, but al ready he is looking for ways to es cape two months of continuous con finement. T would like to pay the penalty on my own time, ” Hansen said in an interview, explaining that he could serve his sentence at night or on weekends. The Idaho Republican, who vows not to resign his congressional seat, added, “My concern, really, is not to miss the job I was sent here to do. I would like to keep on voting. Cru cial issues are often decided in committee, sometimes on the floor, by one vote.” Hansen was ordered last Friday to report to the Allenwood, Pa., federal prison camp May 2. He re ceived a one-year sentence from U.S. District Judge George L. Hart after pleading guilty to two mis demeanor violations of campaign laws. Ten months of the sentence were suspended. Hansen explained his reluctance to resign by saying, “If I did resign, nobody would be available for ser vice” to his constituents. Perhaps, he said, he could be released from jail temporarily to make key House votes. Hansen said his lawyers are exp loring ways to permit him to serve part of his sentence in the House. Ideally, he added, imprisonment could be avoided altogether. Although his lawyers have filed no new appeals, Hansen’s attorneys reportedly are exploring as a basis for court action the constitutional language which states, in part, the congressmen “shall in all cases, ex cept treason, felony and breach of the peace, be privileged from arrest during tlieir attendance at the ses sion of their respective houses . . . ’ A Justice Department spokes man, however, said this section of law applied to action on the House floor, and that the campaign viola tions occurred while Hansen was campaigning in his district. Hansen asserts the charges of campaign finance law violations were motivated by his political enemies in Idaho and said he felt it was premature to say he had lost his fight to remain free. Referring to newspaper editorials back home calling for his resigna tion, he said they have have been written if his sentence had been a fine of $10. Hansen's salary would continue, “unless someone makes a point of it,” he said. Former Rep. H. R. Gross, R-Iowa, was successful in moving to suspend the pay of former Illinois federal Judge Otto Kerner when he was in prison. Negotiations between represen tatives for the black students and administration officials to discuss student demands ended about 11 p.m. Thursday without a settle ment. The negotiations were to re sume at 8 a.m. Friday. About 40 black students entered University Hall, the administration building on the College Green, shortly after 8 a.m. after about 100 black students surrounded the building. Within hours, more than 400 black and white students were picketing in support of those inside. The takeover was peaceful, and all but two university officials and employees left the building after the students moved in. They remained into the evening and said they were going to keep an eye on things. Six Latin-American students also took part in the takeover. “The university has been insensi tive to our demands,” a spokesman for the Third World Coalition said after the takeover. Brown official made no im mediate move to call in city police, although campus officers were pre sent. Who are you? What are you doing about it? Peoples’ consciousness-raising groups being formed.
