Track team visits Waco
It looks like these guys are getting ready to fry some fish, but they’re actually weighing bass in the Aggie
Bass Club’s first Tournament. Checking the scales are Club President Tony Krauska, Sponsor Tommy
Nuche, and Tournament Chairman Chuck Use.
Bellard’s gridders prepare
for Saturday scrimmage
By MIKE BRUTON
Sports Editor
The Texas Aggie football team
tuned up Thursday with little con
tact as it prepared for its third spring
scrimmage coming up on Saturday.
The offense ran through plays
briskly as the defense went against
some Ole Miss offensive sets. There
wasn’t much hitting as the workout
was used as a teaching session.
Head Coach Emory Bellard has
moved the start of the scrimmage
from 2:30 p.m. to 11 a.m. This
Saturday s action will be the last
full-contact workout before the
climactic Maroon-White game on
April 26.
Saturday s scrimmage will proba
bly have the No. 1 units, defense
and offense, going against the No. 2
units. The first two scrimmages
were hard fought with the starting
units battling each other. But the
Ags have apparently accomplished
what Bellard had intended and are
gearing down for the grand finale.
The starting offense will be Carl
Roaches at split end, Richard Os
borne at tight end, Glen Bujnoch
and Dennis Swilley or Dennis
Smelseratthe tackles, Bruce Welch
and Billy Lemons at the guards,
Henry Tracy at center, Skip Walker
and Bubba Bean at the halfbacks,
Bucky Sams at the fullbacks, and
David Walker under the tee.
The front wall of the defense will
be Tank Marshall and Blake
Schwarz at the ends and Edgar
Fields and Jimmy Dean anchoring
the middle. The linebacking chores
will be handled by Garth Ten Napel
and Ed Simonini on the outsides
and Grady Wilkerson or Robert
Jackson in the pit.
The secondary will be All-
American Pat Thomas and Willie
Thompson at the corners with Jac
kie Williams and Lester Hayes at
the safeties.

Sprinter Sam Dierschke will re
turn to action and hurdler Scottie
Jones is listed as a possible as the
Texas A&M track team visits Waco
tomorrow.
Both thinclads have been out of
action since the Border Olympics.
Dierschke is scheduled to run in the
open quarter and Jones, two-time
Southwest Conference hurdles
champion, may compete in the
shuttle hurdles relay.
Baylor will host the Aggies along
with Lamar Tech, North Texas
State, SMU, UH and UTA. TCU
was entered to compete but pulled
out to go to the Kansas Relays.
A&M sent one representative to
Lawrence, Bill Newton in the jave
lin.
Track Coach Charles Thomas ex
presses concern that the Waco meet
may be rigged for Baylor. He point
ed out that the spring relay is run
only 20 minutes after the spring
medley relay causing Thomas to
have to shift his sprinters around.
“The meet is really a relay carnival
and not a regular track meet. They
shouldn't scor it,” Thomas said.
Extra incentive will be provided
as wrist watches will be awarded to
all first place winners.
A total of 29 Aggie thinclads
have reached the qualifying marks
for the SWC meet including both
relay teams.
Next week the Aggies travel to
the prestigious Drake Relays in
Des Moines, Iowa. The team will
leave Thursday via chartered jet.
