Doug Brodhead went home last
weekend and it seemed he wanted
to make sure everyone knew it as
Texas A&M went to the Southwest
ern Relays.
The Aggie team captain swept for
a first place finish in the 220-yard
dash, the first time he had com
peted in that event this season.
Brodhead ran a 20.8 to grab the
heat.
Brodhead, who was the high
point man in the Southwest Confer
ence meet last year, also took sixth
in the 100-yard dash with a 9.7. He
qualified for the conference meet in
both the 220 and 100. His 220 time
qualified him for nationals.
Distance man Bruce Smith “ran
great” according to Head Track
Coach Charles Thomas. Smith cap
tured the three mile run with a
14.08.0 clocking, A&M’s best mark
in that race this year. Charles Cottle
dropped his three mile time from
14.51.0 to 14.19.1, much to
Thomas’ satisfaction.
Taking second in the javelin was
Bill Newton, losing the event by
about a foot. Jim Brannen finished
fifth in the 880-yard run at 1.55.1
while Richard McGilvray took
fourth in the 440-yard hurdles. Pat
Ruehle and David Peterek
polevaulted to fourth and fifth place
spots with efforts of 15-0 and 14-6.
Gerald D’Ambrosio qualified for
the S WC quarter as did highjumper
Don Riggs with a leap of 6-6.
The Aggie jumpers were
“psyched” out by a hole in the run
way leading to the bar. “I wasn’t
satisfied with our highjumpers.
They haven’t jumped well all year,”
said Thomas.
Thomas was very satisfied with
the performance of Brodhead.
“Brodhead’s performance was
super. Once he got started in the
100 he was really moving. But the
others just beat him out of the
blocks, he said. *
This week the Aggies will com
pete in an eight team meet in Waco
featuring Baylor, SMU, TCU, UH,
UTA, Lamar Tech and North Texas
State. A&M was scheduled to go to
Kansas this weekend but chose to go
to Waco instead. The trip up High
way 6 saves “about $2000. It costs
$2500 to go to Kansas and only $200
to go to Waco,” said Assistant Track
Coach Ted Nelson.
Thomas feels the meet is “rigged
for Baylor” with the list of events.
The sprint relay is run only 20 mi
nutes after the sprint medley relay
which will test the Aggies’ depth in
the sprinting department.
Back off the sick list is stellar dash
man Sam Dierschke who will com
pete for the first time since the Bor
der Olympics. Dierschke will run
the open quarter. Robert Harris will
see his first action in quite a while as
he runs the 100 and half miler
Adolph Tingan will test his legs in
the two-mile relay. “Scottie Jones is
the only guy not competing,” said
I’m not the QB
Tate commended
for graciousness
Thomas. “We re on the road back.
Weightman Frank West will also
be present at the meet if he com
pletes his football obligations in
time.
The meet will be a lucrative one
for all first place finishers as wrist
watches will be awarded those win
ning their events. Action gets un
derway Saturday at 3:30 p. m.

I would like to tip my hat to Mar
vin Tate of the TAMU Athletic De
partment for the professional way
that the events around the John
Schlicher accident were handled
this past weekend.
Ever since it happened people
have asked me, “Well, will he still
be able to play basketball?”
It seems to me that Tate and oth
er athletic department personnel
are only interested in the recovery
of Schlicher, not if he can play bas
ketball. That is
the way it should
be. Too often we
think of an ath
lete only in terms
of an athlete, if
the athlete can’t
play we don’t
think of him at all.
Not so in this ^ r - . (
case for the athletic department and
yours truly. The total recovery of
John Schlicher is first and foremost
and after that if he can continue to
play basketball fine, if not everyone
should be thankful that he did re
cover. I might also add that there
is no reason to believe that John
will not fully recover from his ac
cident and lead a full and normal
life.
TAMU basketball coaches Shelby
Metcalf, Norman Reuther and Bob
Gobin are staying at the hospital
night and day with John’s parents,
not to recruit or to sell Texas A&M
but out of honest interest for a fine
young man and his recovery. Our
hats are off to them also.

How about those Aggie base-
ballers? They are quietly closing
in on quite a few school records
and will probably pass quite a few
Mustangs
(continued from p. 8)
What Barker considers to be a
“monumental match” will take
place this Saturday in Dalis, as SMU
hosts the University of Texas. He
believes the match will be close
with the winner becoming the new
SWC champion, dethroning the
University of Houston. The Aeeies
have lost dual matches to both con
tenders, Texas (7-2) and SMU (8-1).
The only action this week for the
Aggies will come this weekend
when the netmen travel to
Huntsville to play Sam Houston
State, Friday. Saturday afternoon,
the team will host Texas Christian
University at 1:30.

team and individual records before
the regular season ends in two
weeks.
The team batting average record
of .342 is in danger.
Hoot Gibson has already tied
the record for most victories in a
season with nine.
Probably the most important one
is the total amount of wins in a sea
son by an Aggie team. The record
is 31 victories. The Ags have six
games left to break that one. It’s
important this year because the
more wins the better the chance of
landing a playoff spot.
It’s too bad that such a fine team
has to play in such a you-know-what
stadium.
★★★
One final note about John
Schlicher. It wouldn’t be a bad
idea for interested Aggies to send a
get well card or letter to Schlicher.

Brown gets
1975 Coach
of Year title
NEW YORK (AP) — Larry
Brown, who led the Denver Nug
gets from last place to the best re
cord in pro basketball, was named
the American Basketball
Association’s Coach of the Year for
the 1974-75 season Monday.
Brown, a former star playmaker
in the ABA, received 28 1 /2 votes of a
possible 30 in balloting by sports
writers and broadcasters in each of
the league’s 10 franchise cities. Bob
Leonard of the Indiana Pacers col
lected the remaining D/a votes.
Brown is the first coach in the
eight-year history of the ABA to
earn Coach of the Year honors
twice. He first received the award in
the 1972-73 season for guiding the
Carolina Cougars to the Eastern
Division championship.
“Obviously I’m thrilled,” Brown
said. “It’s quite an honor, but the
team is responsible for our success.
They have done everything we have
asked of them and then some. Back
in September they accepted our
philosophy and have really sac
rificed to get the job done. ”
This season the Nuggets were
65-19 and set a pro basketball record
with a 40-2 record at home.

Your deposits to an Individual Retirement Account
will be 100% deductible from your 1975 income tax.
If you are not now covered by a pension or retirement
plan (even if you may someday qualify for such a com
pany benefit) you can build a tax-sheltered savings ac

— up to $1,500 (or 15% of your annual income,
whichever is less) is deductible from your 1975 income
tax.
Earnings on your tax-sheltered account are also free
from tax — until you retire. (And since earning power
normally drops off after retirement, you may pay taxes on
the earnings at a considerably lower rate than now).
It only takes a few minutes to open an Individual Retire

special savings account.
Find out if you can qualify for BB&L tax-sheltered sav
