ball player and Texas A&M recruit
was seriously injured Saturday dur
ing his visit to A&M.
John Schlicher from Ft. Worth
Paschel was riding a horse when the
horse ran into a tree. The force of
impact caused a skull fracture and a
broken arm.
The accident occurred Saturday
around 3:30. He was rushed to St.
Joseph Hospital and then was flown
to Houston for surgery.
The three hour surgery was
termed a success to repair a dam
aged artery and removal of a blood
clot. Schlicher remains in the neural
intensive care unit at Methodist
Hospital in Houston in fair condi
tion.
TAMU associate athletic director
Marvin Tate expressed concern for
the Schlicher family Monday and
also praised local medical workers
who were so helpful Saturday.
“The people who helped out here
were super,” said Tate. “The crew
at St. Joseph Hospital did just a
great job.
3:30 and he was in Houston at 5:30, ”
Tate said.
Schlicher is considered to be one
of the best college prospects in the
state.

everything possible to take care of

The father of the 18-year-old,
John H. Schlicher, said his son suf
fered internal bleeding that has
been stopped. The father quoted
doctors as saying the youth would
be in intensive care “for several
days.”
“He’s quite active, but no real
alert and that’s of some concern,”
said Schlicher. “His arm was
smashed up pretty bad and they
worked on it, but they’ll have to do
an awful lot more.’’
Schlicher is ranked fourth on the
state’s “blue chip” list. His father
said it was not known as yet how the
youth’s injuries would affect his
playing future.

Editor’s Note: Watch Ratt for
interview with Swanson this week.
Lyndon Swanson, a 6-8 forward-
center from Martinton, 111., has
signed a basketball letter-of-intent
with Texas A&M, according to
coach Shelby Metcalf.
Swanson, who was named to the
all-state team by both the Chicago
Tribune and Chicago Daily News,
was contacted by more than 150 col
leges. He narrowed his choices
down to A&M and Memphis State
before signing with the Aggies.
“Swanson’s the best big man
shooter I’ve seen since John Beas
ley,” A&M assistant coach Norman
Reuther said. “He has all the qual
ities you are looking for — charac
ter, intelligence, competitiveness
and ability. Were extremely
pleased that he chose A&M.”
Swanson led Watseka High
School to third place in the Illinois
State Tournament in which he was
the leading scorer and reboLinder.
This season he averaged 30 points
per game while shooting 53 percent
from the field and 80 percent from
the free throw line.
In 88 career games, Swanson
scored in double figures 83 times
and had more than 20 points 63
times. He is in the top quarter of his
class, was all-state in football,
played pitcher and firstbase in
baseball, and threw the shot and
discus in track.
Swanson’s list of honors is long.
He made all-county, all-conference
and all-area for three years. He was
named to the 50-year Golden An
niversary team in Iroquois County
and the Associated Press all-state
tournament team. He set five re
