It’s spring football time again and
the sparks are flying on Kyle Field.
My eyes almost popped out when I
saw the first units, offense and de
fense, butting heads. It didn’t take
me long to figure out that this was the
most physical first day of spring
training since Emory Bellard be
came Head Coach at Texas A&M.
Bellard said in a press conference
Wednesday that
the teams need a
little extra con
tact this spring.
“Your progress
may not be spec
tacular and there
is a hesitancy to
do it (have con
tact) because
there’s a chance of injury, but we
feel we need to do it, because that’s
the kind of spring we need, ” com
mented Bellard.
Many people began to question
A&M’s killer instinct in some of
the games of the 1974 season, the
TCU game especially. But people
seem to forget the fanatical effort
that the Aggies displayed against
Texas Techjust a week earlier. After
performing at such a high pitch it’s
not unusual for a football team to hit
a low ebb. That is, if you call setting
a school record of minus 58 yards
rushing a low ebb.
The spring drills have already
offered an answer to all those who
feel that the Ags were too conser
vative offensively last year. With
the ground chewing, ball control T-
Bone offense last year the Aggies
didn’t have the high scoring games
that many fans expected. But Bel
lard and new offensive coordinator
Tom Wilson has fielded a wishbone
offense with I-formation variations
in the 1975 spring drills.
With the new “I-Bone” offense
the Maroon will be able to fully
utilize the speed of their backs
and receivers. This, of course, will
entail more passing. “We re going
to put a lot of emphasis on the
passing game this spring,’’remarked
Bellard.
Actually the T-Bone is still the
basic offense for the Aggies but
the added attacks will give the Ma
roon Machine versatility. Some
might argue that these varied at
tacks will cause confusion amongst
the players on execution and block
ing assignments. But Wilson has
already shown his coaching ability
as the Ag offense operated ade
quately smooth the first two days
of spring practice.
I’m not the only one who has
faith in the 1975 Aggies and Wil
son as one national poll has picked
A&M fifth in an early pre-season
vote.

Irwin Rosee, Lyle’s manager of
record, said he had talked with Bill
Daniels, Lyle’s business partner by
telephone in Denver and that “the
terms are agreeable and we will sign
a contract. ”
Rosee said Lyle would begin
training immediately.
A spokesman for Herbert
Muhammad, Ali’s manager, said in
Chicago “the fight is on, the money
is up.”
Ali reportedly will get $1 million
and Lyle $75,000.
Lyle, a 33-year-old ex-convict,
has been set to fight Ali in New York
March 24 but that fight fell through
and Ali fought Chuck Wepner on
that date in the Cleveland Col
iseum. Ali stopped Wepner in the
15th round. Madison Square Gar
den then said it hoped to land a Lyle
fight for June but any Lyle-Ali fight
seemed out of the question after
Lyle lost a 10-round decision to un
heralded Jimmy Young.
Speculation had been that Ali
would next fight European champ
ion Joe Bugner of Britain in June
and negotiations were underway.

in golf match
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) —
Tom Weiskopf mastered biting cold
and brutal, sometimes dangerous
winds with a stunning seven-
under-par 64 and assumed a three-
stroke lead Thursday in the first
round of the $225,000 Greater
Greensboro Open Golf Tourna
ment.
“One of the finest rounds of golf I
have ever played, Weiskopf said
after his impeccable effort in the
all-but-impossible conditions that
plagued the 6,643-yard Sedgefield
Country Club course.
Dave Hill, his skinny frame buf
feted by the gale-force winds, was in
second after a 67.
The only others able to break par
were Perry Leslie with a 68 and
Jerry Heard with a 70. Lee Trevino
struggled to a 71 and Johnny Miller
shot 72.

Cards rip
Astros with
big inning
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) —
Held to only three runs in two pre
vious meetings with Houston, the
St. Louis Cardinals erupted for
seven hits in the fourth inning
Thursday and walloped the Astros
10-5 in exhibition play.
Larry Dierker, trying to hold
onto a three-run lead, walked him
self into difficulty before Ed Brink-
man delivered a two-run single. An
error by Astros second baseman
Rob Andrews and two-run singles
from Bake McBride and Ted Size
more completed the rally.
Five of the seven runs charged to
Dierker were unearned.
Houston’s Cesar Cedeno ho-
mered off starter Claude Osteen in
the first inning and the Astros
moved to a 3-0 lead in the third on a
single by Skip Jutze, Andrews’ tri
ple and an RBI single by Cliff John
son.
Osteen permitted seven of
Houston’s nine hits as the Cards
improved their Grapefruit League
record to 11-15. Houston dropped
to 12-16.

LOCAL GROUP STIRS CONTROVERSY
Not since former Aggie
Sweetheart Snow White was
discovered rooming with the
seven twisted little cretins has
so much controversy hit the
A&M Campus. Yesterday an
announcement was made
that traditional concepts of the
word Hero seem to have
changed. A group consisting
of patrons and employees of
Heroes Clothing Store
(Northgate) and KTAM Radio
1240 disc jockeys have been
seeking a new definition for
hero.
Heroes Clothing Store has
offered a $25.00 gift certifi
cate for the person submitting
the best definition of a Hero
prior to April 26. They have
also offered a certificate good
for $1.00 toward any purch
ase of $5.00 or more to every
person who enters a defini
tion. Big rewards for a little
help!
OPPOSITION
Opposition came from three
sources as the group threatens tradi
tional concepts by offering a list of
people who could suggest certain
qualities helpful in forming a definition
of a Hero. One complaint was from
students who felt that local leaders
and student leaders should have
been included in the lists and pic
tures. Another was from authorities
who requested that the planned in
clusion of local persons be omitted.
The third suggestion was that Patty
Ht 14

Hearst might protest — or even sue
— over including her name as a pos
sible heroine.
We are prepared for a certain
amount of opposition as we seek a
definition that applies to today. If
Patty would like to drop in and discuss
her situation we will visit with her —
otherwise we will stand firm — martyr
— like — in the face of opposition.
Heroes has been long noted for its
interest in keeping contemporary
things available to the public—things
like Indian Imports, uncommonly de
signed casuals, and now... a search
for even more eyecatching concepts.
Drop in — we’ll offer you a lemon-
drop and whisper thoughts of local
heroes in your ear. We’ll tell you
things we cannot put in print — and
we’ll show you some interesting ways
to cover up your body. Every visit is
worth a buck — and if yours is the
selected definition the extra $25
could add to your new image! Listen
to the discussion on KTAM — read
about it in the Batt — or come on by
and get the word in person!
