Hie House has passed and sent to
the Senate a bill which would dis
continue state funding of county
school administrative offices. The
bill, HB 226, would go into effect
after August 31, 1977, thus allowing
those presently in office to finish the
terms to which they were elected.
State Representative Bill Presnal
of Bryan said in a press release,
“County school administrative of
fices were initially created by sta
tute at the same time when Texas
first embarked upon a program of
establishing publicly financed
school systems. At that time, there
was a definite need for a coordinat
ing arm within the counties to get
the individual school districts
started. Over the years, however,
the individual school districts have
taken on more and more authority
previously granted to the county
school boards.”
Presnal went on to say that by
discontinuing state funding of these
oflices, the state will be able to re
allocate some $3.4 million annually *
across the state to other public
school needs. These funds have
previously been required to operate
county school administrative of
fices.
Counties will still have the option
of retaining their county school of
ficers, provided they are willing to
pay their salaries.
Brazos County School Superin
tendent Jack Streetman receives
$14,136 annually in salary. Al
though there are no county schools
as such, Streetman is in charge of
directing adult education courses in
the county.
Former fed
hits press
over CIA
WASHINGTON (AP) — A
former FBI agent criticized the
press Monday, saying it focused at
tention on alleged domestic wrong
doings by the CIA while failing to
investigate the operations of Soviet
spies in the United States.
“You’ll find much more domestic
surveillance and invasion of pri
vacy” at the Soviet embassy in
Washington, Sam J. Papich told re
porters after testifying before the
Rockefeller Commission.
Asked if he knew that KGB agents
have bugged American citizens,
Papich, who for 18 years handled
liaison, with the CIA, replied “of
course, I’m satisfied of that.” He re
fused to elaborate.
The Rockefeller Commission also
questioned briefly FBI Director
Clarence M. Kelley and William O.
Cregar, who also handled CIA
liaison, but neither man would
comment to reporters.
Following the commission’s 11th
weekly session, Vice President Nel
son A. Rockefeller confirmed that
he would ask President Ford for an
extension of several weeks in the
panel’s April 4 reporting deadline.
Asked if the commission planned
to look into the CIA’s salvaging of a
sunken Soviet sub, Rockefeller re
plied that “all activities that relate to
domestic activities of CIA all fall
within our jurisdiction.”
HouseWAVE
makes waves
over new order
MEMPHIS (AP) — Newlywed
Dianna Farmer bade her husband a
tearful goodby Tuesday morning
and departed for a new Navy as
signment, hoping they will be reun
ited soon.
“She really didn’t want to go, but
it was the only logical thing to do, ”
said her husband, Jim, 26, a
parachute rigger in the Naval Air
Reserve who is stationed at the
Memphis Naval Air Station.
He and Mrs. Farmer, 19, who is a
WAVE, thought they had a Navy
promise that they would be allowed
to serve at the same base when they
were married a month ago. But she
later received orders to report to a
base at Kingsville, Tex., on Thurs
day.
They have enlisted the help of
Sen. Howard Bafer, R-Tenn., in
trying to persuade Naval authorities
to change her orders and give them
an assignment together. They hope
to hear something within a month.
“The last couple of days have re
ally been rough for her,” Farmer
said. “We’re expecting the worst
and hoping for the best.”
