It was a lackluster game for the Aggies as they hit only 35% of their shotsfromthefieldandonly67%from the free throw line to drop their seventh game of the season. The game got away fro m the Aggies late in the first half. With 5:06 left in thehalfthescorewastiedat21. What happened in the next 2:49 was the beginning of the end for the Ags. The Aggies missed three free th rows (all th r ee were thefirstendofa one and one) and an easy layup while the Bearcats pumped in nine unans wered points to grab a30-21 lead with 2:17 to go in the half. Cincy outscored the Aggies the rest ofthe way 7-6fora37-27halftime lead. The Ags never recovered. A&M gotashotin thearm midway through the second half but it wasn’t enough. Little-used Chuck Tone cameoffthebenchtoscoresixstraight points to draw the Aggies within six, 55-49. Two minutes later Tone’s fourth basket of the night cut the Bearcatleadtofour, butthat’sasclose as it got. Cincinnati quickly stretched the lead to ten and held it throughout the rest of the game. The final score, A&M 79, Cincinnati 87. The game was thelastof the season for the Aggies who were repesenting the Southwest Conference as its champions. It was the first Aggie team ever to win 20 games and thefirst Ag team to win the conference championship since 1969. It was a somber Aggie dressing room as the conference champs pre pared for their flight back to College Station. “It’s over now and I’m just glad to be going out as conference champs, ” said team captain John Thornton. “It’s really funny, that conference championship didn’t mean a damn thing tonight when that game was over but now it means a lot to me,” said senior guard Mike Floyd as the team’s charter left Lubbock airport. Universities, high schools to compete in CS relays A&M Consolidated High School andTexas A&M host the S ixth Annual College Station Relays Saturday, March 22. Some of the better high school track teams in the state will he there. Weather cancels tri-meet; tracksters get needed rest Coach CharlesThomas’ track team had an unexpected holiday last weekend as the tri-meet with TCU and SMU was cancelled due to foul weather. The cancellation was fortunate in one aspect; it gave the Aggies’ walk- ingwoundedanaddedweekofrestfor their injured limbs. Four of A&M’s more valuable runners (Charles Dawson, Sam Dierschke, Scottie Jones and Horace Grant) would have missed themeet. Severalotherswere to compete even with sore legs. A&M will host the College Station Relays this weekend in their second to last home appearance. The events will get underway at 1:30p.m. Satur day.
