Mauzy says change ‘lily-white image

A
AUSTIN (AP) — Sen. Oscar
Mauzy told three University of
Texas regent appointees Tuesday
that they have got to help the state’s
largest school “overcome its lily-
white image.”
“I have a keen interest in righting
the wrongs that have gone on for
generations,” said one of the ap
pointees, Fort Worth lawyer
Thomas Law.
It was noted that Law once ran
against John Connally for UT stu
dent body president but lost.
Gov. Dolph Briscoe appointed
Law and Houston businessman
Walter Sterling to the board of re
gents and reappointed Dan Wil
liams of Dallas, all for six-year
terms.
After grilling the trio for one hour
and 20 minutes Tuesday, Mauzy,
D-Dallas, the chairman of the Se
nate Education Committee, asked
them to come back for more ques
tions Wednesday morning.
This should give students a
chance to seek the appointees’
views on higher education. Al
though several registered to testify
Tuesday, a committee hearing had
to be cut short because the Senate
was going into session.
Sen. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, a
first-term legislator who received
substantial student support in his
1973 race, asked the three appoin
tees’ reaction to a faculty resolution
expressing “no confidence” in uni
versity Chancellor Charles
LeMaistre after he fired Dr.
Stephen Spurr as president.
“It’s another fact to be consi
dered, but I might not agree with
it,” said Sterling. Earlier, however,
when asked if he would have “any
qualms” about discharging
LeMaistre if he abused his author
ity, Sterling replied, “Not a bit.”
In response to Doggett’s ques
tion, Williams said that only 300 to
400 of 1,600 faculty members had
voted on the LeMaistre resolution,
and he added, “I have a great deal of
confidence in our chancellor.”
Law said, “I do have confidence
in Chancellor LeMaistre.”
Much of the questioning focused
on how the appointees felt about
recruiting minority students.
Sterling said it would be “terribly
hard” for the school president, Dr.
Lorene Rogers, “to carry out” re
cent federal requirements, but
“we ll help her as we can.” He
cautioned, however, that “we
should maintain the university’s
academic students. I’d hate to see us
lower the standards to accommo
date minority groups.”
“To my knowledge,” said Wil
liams, “no one who’s qualified has
been turned down.”
“I don’t think we can emphasize it
(minority recruiting) too much,”
said Law.
The university “has got to work
harder at it than some other schools
have,” said Mauzy.
“I think we ll be proud about
what’s been done the past three
years,” said Williams.
Mauzy asked Sterling if he had
been a member of the Houston
Committee for Sound American
Education in the 1950s, a commit
tee Mauzy said purportedly sought
to maintain segregated schools.
Sterling said the committee was
formed to elect a certain slate of
school trustees and “had nothing to
do” with the U.S. Supreme Court
which outlawed segregation in pub
lic schools.
But wasn’t it part of the commit-

LONDON (AP) — Queen
Victoria’s family and government
leaders of the day hushed up Buck
ingham Palace’s reported connec
tion to a sex scandal that shocked
Britain 75 years ago, according to
official documents opened this week
for the first time.
The scandal centered on a male
homosexual brothel in London’s
Cleveland Street allegedly fre
quented by Lord Arthur Somerset,
equerry to the Prince of Wales, and
other prominent men.

tee platform to resist integration,
Mauzy asked.
“Not that I know of,” replied
Sterling.
Sen. JackOgg, D-Houston, asked
Sterling his age and about his physi
cal condition, apparently because a
student leader had told of another
regent confirming that Sterling fell
asleep and snored in a recent meet
ing last month. His age “may be a
problem,” said student vice presi
dent Bill Parrish.
“I’ll be 74 in May, but I don’t
think age has anything to do with
it,” said Sterling. “The experience
I’ve had in 74 years can be turned to
value for the University of Texas
system.”
“I see my internist every 60 to 90
days and he checks me over and says
I’m in good health, " said Sterling.

BATTALION CLASSIFIED
Details of the affair came to light
when the director of public prosecu
tions opened relevant documents to
public inspection. Until recently,
the department kept the wraps on
official documents for 100 years.
The papers confirm rumors rife at
the time that such leaders as the
Prince of Wales and the prime
minister, Lord Salisbury, pre
vented authorities from prosecuting
Lord Somerset. The Prince of
Wales, the eldest son of Queen Vic
toria, became King Edward VII.
The documents also revealed that
officials at the time wrote that Lord
Somerset’s attorney boasted that if
the peer was taken to court “a very
distinguished person will be in
volved — PAV.”
That referred to Prince Albert
Victor, the black sheep among
Queen Victoria’s children. The
prince’s name had earlier been
mentioned in the “Jack the Ripper”
murders that terrorized London.
The documents do not mention
Prince Albert further. They show
the attorney general, the public
prosecutor and the police commis
sioner wanted to prosecute Lord
Somerset, who is referred to in the
documents as “Mr. Brown,” under
stringent laws forbidding acts of
“gross indecency” between male
homosexuals.
However, the then home secret
ary, Lord Halsbury, plus Lord
Salisbury and other leaders were
against this, partly because of Lord
Somerset’s position in society and
partly because they feared other
prominent Britons would be impli
cated.
The papers also include evidence
that distinguished clients of the
brothel tried to bribe the male pros
titutes of Cleveland Street to go ab
road before they could be called as
witnesses.

TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY
OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF ADMISSIONS AND
RECORDS
To be eligible to purchase the Texas A&M ring, an
undergraduate student must have at least one year in
residence and credit for at least ninety-two (92) semester
hours. A year in residence may consist of the fall and
spring semesters or one of the above and a full summer
session (both the first and second terms). The hours
passed at the preliminary grade report period on March
12, 1975 may be used in satisfying this ninety-two hour
requirement. Students qualifying under this regulation
should leave their names with the ring clerk, room
seven, Richard Coke Building. This should be done
prior to March 12th in order for all records to be checked
to determine ring eligibility. Students already having
ninety-two (92) completed hours on record may order at
any time since regular orders are sent in at the end of
each month. Graduate students are eligible to order with
proof (receipt) that they have filed for graduation.
Orders for mid semester will be taken by the ring clerk
starting March 24, 1975 and will continue until Mav 1,
1975 at 4 p. m. All rings must be paid for in full when the
order is placed. Students will save time if they will bring
grade reports along when ready to order. Students who
fail to leave their names in advance will be asked to
return later to allow time for records to be checked. The
rings are due to arrive at the registrar’s on June 17, 1975.
All rings ordered, regardless of whether on March 24,
1975 or May 1, 1975, will arrive at the same time.
The ring clerk is on duty from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1
p.m. to 5 p.m. of each week, Monday through Friday.
However, in order for records to be checked, orders
must be placed prior to 4 p.m. during this ordering
period.
We hope this information will be helpful and extend our
congratulations.
