Brodhead hopes to retain crown
By PAUL McGRATH

Texas was running away and hid-
ngfrom the rest of the league in the
1974 Southwest Conference track
meet. Texas A&M was valiantly
making a bid for second.
Despite the Longhorn’s domi
nance, most of the events were very

competitive. The only race that
looked like a sure thing, according
to the Houston papers, was the
440-yard dash where Texas’ Don
Sturgal was picked to be a shoo-in
winner.
However, a race is not won until
it is run. When the quarter mile
event was over, it was Texas A&M’s
Doug Brodhead standing in the
winner’s circle, not Sturgal.
Brodhead not only won the quarter,
but ended the meet’s high point
man with 20 marks.
Brodhead’s other points came in
the 220-yard dash where he took
second behind SMU’s Joe Pouncey
and he ran the second legs on
A&M’s 440-yard and mile relay
squads which placed fourth in both
events.
“It was the best day I ever had,”
said Brodhead. “I had confidence I
^ould beat him (Sturgal) and I did.’
Brodhead will earn his fourth
track letter this year after coming to
A&M from Cathedral High School
in Lafayette, La. The Aggie quarter
miler was the state champ in both
the 100 and 220-yard dashes. He
was flown to A&M the day after the
state meet. “I’d heard a lot about
A&M. I liked the facilities and it
wasn’t too big,” Brodhead said.
Primarily a dash man, Brodhead
was converted into a quarter miler
by A&M Track Coach, Charles
Thomas. “After talking with the
(A&M) coaches I knew I was going
to be a quarter miler,” said the
Aggie senior.
It would have to be said that he
adjusted to the transition more than
adequately. His freshman year he
ran a 45.9 quarter at the Drake Re
lays in Iowa.
Brodhead became a leg man on
the 440 and mile relay teams. He
has run some of his best quarters on
the mile relay, with times in the 45
second range. Brodhead says it is a
little easier to get psyched up” when
running a relay.
Brodhead related that he used to
get nervous being around some of
the people he used to read about.
But now he is able to concentrate
better and not worry about those
around him. At Drake, other mile
relay teams mouthed, “Man, we re
gonna kick some butt today.” With
the help of teammates, Brodhead
learned to let these type of com
ments pass and not let them affect
him.
“It’s good to get out fast because
you can’t see others behind you,”
said Brodhead on running the quar
ter. “At the start I always like to
know who will be on my outside or
inside. If I make up the stagger
(spacing runners at the start) at the
220 mark, I figure I’m doing pretty
good. ”

pretty important. It means quite a
big of time sometimes. A good lead
off leg is also important. You get
behind too far and it’s harder to run.
I like running the second leg, I al
ways run better when I’m up with
the people.”
Last year was the first time
Brodhead had run the 220 at A&M.
Despite the three year layoff, he
finished second at the conference
meet. Brodhead still has fond
memories of last year’s perfor
mance. “I was happy at the time. It
kind of gave everyone a boost be
cause we hadn’t done that well in
the prelims. ”
Brodhead again faces stiff com
petition from around the confer
ence. TCU offers up Bill Collins and
Sam McKinney to challenge
Brodhead’s reign in the quarter.
Collins is posting some of his best
times ever and McKinney won the
SWC indoor quarter. Baylor’s Tim
Son and Herb Kinney of Rice are
also top notch quarter milers.
“My main goal is to stay healthy,”
said Brodhead. “My knees bothered
me some last year. I always get some
kind of injury. This year I’ve been
pretty fortunate.” As for what he ll
do after he graduates, Brodhead
said, “If I run anymore depends on
how I run this year. It’s just a matter
of how things go. ”
But as the man who scored almost
a third of A&M’s points in the SWC
meet said, “It’s still a long way until
May.”
