BRYAN (AP) — Ford Albritton
Jr., of Bryan, facing Texas Senate
opposition, said Thursday he was
asking Gov. Dolph Briscoe to with
draw his appointment to the Texas
College Coordinating Board.
“Apparently there is enough op
position in the Senate to block my
nomination. I do not think it will
benefit the coordinating board or
the State of Texas to have this mo
tion debated in the state Senate. I
am therefore asking the governor to
withdraw my name, ” said Albritton.
Albritton made his comments to
the Bryan Eagle.
The appointees were cleared by
the Senate Nominations Committee
Tuesday after a long hearing in
which several of them were ques
tioned at length concerning their
political affiliations and views on
education.
The Austin American-Statesman
said Wednesday that “a nomina
tions subcommittee source” said
opposition was being rallied against
Ford D. Albritton Jr. of Bryan,
named to complete a six-year term
that ends this Aug. 31.
Albritton told the nominations
committee Tuesday he had contri
buted up to $9,000 to the governor’s
last two campaigns but indicated he
did not think there was any connec
tion between the donations and his
appointment.
The American-Statesman quoted
Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby as saying, “I
know he will be opposed. That’s all I
can tell you, ” about Albritton’s ap
pointment.
The story said Sen. Peyton
McKnight, D-Tyler, who served
four years on the Texas A&M Uni
versity board with Albritton, was
identified as the senator considering
an effort to block confirmation.
“I might oppose him and again I
may not be opposed to any of them, ”
McKnight told the American-
Statesman.
Appointments by the governor
must be confirmed by two-thirds of
the Senate, meaning 11 votes can
block any appointment.
New appointees to the Coordinat
ing Board are Mrs. Jess Hay of Dal
las; Tony Bonilla of Corpus Christi
and Harold Herndon of San An
tonio.
Reappointments to the board are
Fred Moore of Austin, O. H. Elliott
of Austin and Dr. George Brinkley
of Temple.
Silver Taps will be held tonight at
10:30 for two A&M students who
died last week.
Craig F. Foster, 21, of Beeville
was killed Friday night in a one-car
accident near Goliad. Foster, a
freshman biomedical science major,
was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
M. Foster of Beeville. He was
buried Monday morning at Seaside
Memorial Cemetery in Corpus
Christi, following services in
Beeville.
Denny Clark, a senior chemical
engineering major from Houston,
was found dead in his apartment by
a friend March 3.

“It would be very nice to say I did
what I did in loyalty to the presi
dent, ” Dean said. “But I also did the
things I did during Watergate be
cause I was looking out for John
Dean. I was also ambitious and I got
blinded by my own ambitions.
“I knew what pleased my
superiors and I did my damnedest
to please them.”
Dean said he certainly wasn t
proud “to have prepared a memo on
how to screw your enemies.”
Dean recounted his involvement
in the Watergate affair saying the
scandal had been both the best and
worst experience of his life.
“Certainly it was the worst ex
perience of my life because of the
grief it caused my family and the
disgrace of Watergate is certainly
not a pleasant situation. I don’t look
forward to wearing the scarlet letter
of Watergate the rest of my life. ”
Dean said his going to prison for
four months was not pleasant.
“It was not the country club I had
read about in newspapers and
magazines. I never saw the tennis
courts. ”
Another bad experience, he said,
was testifying about Watergate “be
cause I knew it was going to tarnish
the office of the presidency. It
wasn’t something I looked forward
to.”
On the positive side, he said,
Watergate’s “certainly was a matur
ing experience for me. It changed
my perception and views of things.
Sometimes it really takes something
like that to really open your eyes
although it shouldn’t.”
His perception of government
changed because of Watergate, he
noted.
“I began to ask myself what would
have happened if I had left the
White House and we had gotten
away with the coverup. I would
have had a very distorted percep
tion of what should and could be
done in the name of the president of
the United States.
