This group consists of the old oak trees beside the main drill field. There are about 52 to 55 of them. They were planted for living memorials to Aggies who died in World War I. Not many years ago, freshman Corps members were given the ‘privilege’ of remembering the names on these trees and the places where the men had fallen. Almost everyone else has felt their pres ence and considers them as much a part of the University as “Old Sully”. In short, there is a definite emo tional tie between the students and the trees. Now some of these trees might die. The problem started when the construction crews, while digging up the roads for improvements, cut up roots in their way. These ex posed roots could become dry and susceptible to insects and disease. These trees cannot live if their roots are eaten away, says David Morgan, graduate student in horticulture. A.R. Luedecke, executive vice president for Physical Plant and Grounds, says that those in charge of the construction program took into consideration the effects it could have on the trees. “But,” he says, “the job had to be done. We have a lot of concern for these trees and decided to go ahead and do it the best we could with as little damage as possible to them. ” “Efforts are being made to keep the wounded trees alive. The roots are being kept moist and care is being taken to avoid hurting the roots any further,” said Luedecke. “We did receive instructions to be as careful with the trees as possi ble,” said one crew chief at the con struction site.
