Ags hit 100 for first time
Ragged play marks win
BY ROBERT CESSNA
Staff Sports Writer
On Thursday night the Aggies hit
the century mark the first time this
year with a 101-71 win over Sam
Houston State and if you witnessed
the game you also may have hit the
century mark — in age.
The game (if that’s what you want
to call it) featured 62 fouls with two
players of each team fouling out. It
also featured 54 turnovers. In other
words, it wasn’t a game you’d write
home about. But it was a win.
The passing was terrible, the of
ficiating ridiculous and the team de
fense was almost non-existent as
both teams played up and down free
shooting basketball.
At the beginning it appeared as
no team may score as turnovers took
their toll. But with 1:49 gone in the
game, Aggie John Thornton hit a
short baseline shot to put the Ags on
the scoreboard.
A few minutes later the Bearkats’
Skippy Black made a rebound layup
with 16:45 to put Sain Houston
ahead, 5-4, it would he the last
Bearkat lead of the night. At the
Aggie end of the court John Thorn
ton got a rebound and put it in with
16:18 left to give the Aggies a 6-5
lead. From here the Ags never
trailed.
With the score 28-19 in favor of
the Aggies and only 5:57 remaining
in the half some fireworks began.
The Aggies’ Barry Davis was
ejected from the game and given a
technical foul. Davis was ejected for
his roughness with the Bearkats’
Melvin Moore. When Aggie coach
Shelby Metcalf came out to protest
the call the referees blew their whis-

ties again. Another technical.
When the first half ended the Ag
gies owned a 49-29 lead which tied
their biggest lead of the night. The
only reason the crowd of 3,516
stayed around was to see if the Ag
gies could hit 100 and if a new
Southwest Conference record in
fouls could be set.
As the second half began it ap
peared that the Aggies would not
hit a 100 hut set a record for fouls.
With 6:18 gone in the second half
the Aggies had only scored six
points. In this time Sam Houston
had cut the lead to 11, 55-44. But
with an assist from Gates Erwin,
Jerry Mercer started the Aggies off
and running toward 100 points with
a layup.
With time running out the crowd
came to its feet in hopes of the 100th
point. With only 32 seconds left
Cedric Joseph obliged with a tip-in
bucket to give the Aggies a 101-67
lead.
Thornton led all scorers with 19
points while Ray Roberts added 16.
Gates Erwin, Mike Floyd and
Sonny Parker were other Aggies to
hit double figures with 12, 11 and
10 respectively. The Bearkats were
paced by Don Gay who had 16
points. Melvin Moore had 15 and
teammate Skippy Black had 14.
