® Governor s inauguration hosts Ross Volunteers (OTICE 0I.LECE •wlorjl D^,; The state’s oldest student organi zation went to Austin today for its part in the inauguration. A&M’s Ross Volunteers partici pated in the inauguration of Gov. Dolph Briscoe and Lt. Gov. Wil liam P. Hobby. The white-clad RVs were the governor’s official honor guard. They formed a sabre arch from the south entrance of the Capitol to the speaker’s stand for the high noon ceremony. Commander Less Harvey of Houston and 45 members of the elite honor military unit also flanked the speaker’s stand during the pro gram. The inauguration was followed by a reception in the Capitol rotunda. The RVs will be in New Orleans for Mardi Gras Feb. 9-12 and marches in Conroe’s “Go Texan’’ parade Feb. 15. The company was first formed in 1887, as the Scott Volunteers, after the college business manager. It be came known as the Ross Volunteers in the first year of the TAMC presi dency of Gen. Lawrence Sullivan Ross, in 1890-91. The company became the Foster Volunteers after Ross died, but re sumed the name on suggestion of President H. H. Harrington in 1902. More than a dozen Texas gover nors have walked through the Ross Volunteers’ sabre arch to formally become the state’s top elected offi cial. | Campus briefs | Winners to demonstrate The Texas A&M Tae Kwon Do Club will present a karate demonstration Jan. 20-23, 7-8 p.m. in G. Rollie White Coliseum. The three international winners to demonstrate are Steve Powell, a second degree black belt holder and Charlie Senning and Jim Shiner, first degree black belt holders. Star party planned Members of the Central Texas Astronomical Society and TAMU students will meet Jan. 23 if the sky is clear to gaze at four planets and an asteroid in the constellation of Gemini.
