East wins
All-Star
Bit, 108-102
IpHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) — Walt
Frazier, the silky-smooth New York
guard, popped in 30 points and a
-'—^'determined East virtually negated
FIES the opposing team’s giants en route
—''to a 108-102 victory over the favored
^g'West in the National Basketball As-
Hsociation All-Stai (iamc Tuesday
M night.
Frazier, starting in his sixth con-
secutive All-Star Game, drilled in
C ' 10points in the first period and 12 in
the third quarter when the East ap
peared to pull comfortably ahead
83-73 before having to vyithstand a
belated West rally in the closing
Mi- minutes.
His 30 points were the most in
m an All-Star game since Rick Barry’s
^^ 38 in the 1967 contest. For his per-
5235 formance, Frazier won the game’s
Most Valuable Player award.
While the Knicks’ captain was kil-
^ ling the West with his bullseye
shooting, the underdog East’s tough
: defense held the West’s three to
wering centers-T-foot-SVfe Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar, 6-11 Bob Lanier and
6-10 Sam Lacey — to a total of 15
points.
Nate “Tiny” Archibald of Kansas
City-Omaha and Barry, of Golden
State, led the West scoring. Ar
chibald finished with 27 points and
Barry, a fraction of a percentage
point ahead of Buffalo’s Bob
McAdoo in the NBA scoring race,
collected 22.

John Havlicek of Boston added 16
points for the East and McAdoo
scored 11.
After the East’s third-period
blitz, the winners widened their
margin to 12 points midway through
the final period and still were ahead
by 10 at 101-91 with four minutes
remaining.
Then the West began its charge
and cut the deficit to four points in
the closing seconds before Frazier
completed the scoring by sinking
two free throws with eight seconds
to go.
The East got hurt early when star
ter Elvin Hayes of Washington, one
of the league’s top rebounders, was
forced to the sidelines after only 5V2
minutes suffering from flu and
bronchitis. He insisted on playing
and came back in the second half,
but was ineffective.
The West, meanwhile, lost star
ter Spencer Haywood of Seattle
early in the third period, also be-
,cause of flu.
