Rollie White Coliseum. The A&M-Sam Houston series is the longest basketball series A&M has going. The series started in 1913 and has continued until now with a few years absence. The series reached its height in 1928-30 when the Ags played Sam Houston four times each year. The last time A&M met Sam Houston was in 1965 with the Ag gies winning, 75-58. The last time Sam Houston won was in 1957, 59-58. In the series A&M leads, 52-17. A&M will take a 7-4 record into the game against Sam Houston State in their final tuneup before opening Southwest Conference play against Rice. A&M is led in scoring by Sonny Parker and Barry Davis who are av eraging 16 and 15 points per game respectively. John Thornton is close to double figures with a 9.9 average. In rebounds Davis is high with an 8.8 average while Parker and Thornton are close behind with 5.7 and 5.5 respectively. Coach Shelby Metcalf has used his bench frequently with nine players seeing action in all 11 games. Sam Houston State which is 7-10 on the year plays in the Lone Star Conference with East Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, Abilene Christ ian, Angelo State, SW Texas, Texas A&I, Howard Payne, Sul Ross and Tarleton State. Sam Houston owns a 2-3 mark. The starting lineup for Sam Hous ton State will be 6’7” Melvin Moore Gay a 6'2” Junior averaging 111 points per game and 5’9’’ Ker Stewart also a junior. The cent? NA at one forward who is averaging 19.1 points per game. The other starting forward will be James Holcombe, a 6’6” junior. Rollie White Coliseum. The girls will bring a 1-0 record into the game, having defeated Prairie View A&M in December, 59-56. Coach Kay Don said her starting lineup will be taken from the follow ing girls: Karen Aulenbacher, Diane Quitta, Sally Morisse, Laura Holmes, Cissy Auclair and Dana Callaway. In the first contest Aulenbacher led the Aggies with 14 points while teammates Quitta and Auclair added 12 each. Other players Coach Don can call on are Ruth Whitely, Lucy Neiman, Cindy Horton, Sharon Anderson and Linda Fletcher. Coach Don is looking for a tough game because the Aggies have been off for the holidays and they just began practice Monday. They will be able to get three practices in prior to the game. The girls basketball team which is in its second year of existence will be able to play five games this year prior to the men’s games. In the Virginia Commonwealth Tourney at Richmond the Aggies took the crown defeating Fairfield and Virginia Commonwealth. Then in the Astro Bluebonnet Classic the Ags pulled an upset in the opening round defeating the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, 80-78. The Aggies then fell victim to host Houston in the finals, 92-72. (AP) — Terry Bailey and Larry Spruiell led a sec ond half surge that carried the North Texas State University Mean Green to an upset 69-64 basketball victory over the Bradley Braves in a Missouri Valley Conference game here Tuesday night. It was Bailey who sank the last two free throws with 31 seconds left in the game that put the victory, away for the Mean Green and gave NTSU a 2-0 mark in conference play. Bailey with 18 points and Spruiell with 16 scored 22 of their total points in the second half as the Mean Green came back from a 34-32 halftime deficit to take the lead for good with 10 minutes left in the game.
