Teaff inks
new pact
l WACO, Tex. (AP) — Baylor
| Coach Grant Teafl signed a new
* five-year contract Tuesday calling
for an estimated $35,000 a year, not
including fringe benefits, to end
speculation he would bolt the
Southwest Conference champions
for Texas Tech.
After a 1 a.m. telephone talk with
Texas Tech Athletic Director J. T.
King, a close friend, TeafFasked that
he not be considered for the Red
Raider post vacated by Jim Carlen,
who went to South Carolina.
“I saw my new contract for the
first time this morning and signed
it,” said Teaff, who still had two
years left on an old contract.
Teaff was offered the contract
after Baylor defeated Rice to clinch
its first SWC title in 50 years and the
Bears’ first trip to the Cotton Bowl.
“I called him because ther was no
question about my soul-searching,"
Teaff said. ‘‘I wanted to clear the air
so both programs could move for
ward. I have love and respect for
T. It wasn’t a question of whether I
was being considered but whether I
wanted to be considered. There had
been so much speculation about my
;oing to Tech that I needed to make
an announcement because at one
time it had been my fondest ambi
tion. ”
Teaff said, “I am dedicated and
obligated to a group of young men,
my coaching staff, the entire com
munity and the university and its
supporters. Our goal is to see Baylor
University on a competitive level in
the Southwest Conference and on a
national level year after year.”
Teaff had been beseiged by
players on his Cotton Bowl-bound
squad on what his decision would
be.
“I told them not to believe what
eou read in the papers, ” Teaff said.
T told them I still had the same
beam for this university that I had
vhen I signed them. I can tell you
"the looks they had in their eyes had
dot to do with my staying here . . .
hese young men share my dream
or Baylor University.”
Teaff turned around the Bears
from a 2-9 team without a SWC vic
tory to an 8-3 club in 1973. The first
I'ear Teaff came to Baylor the Bears
were4-6. Both in 1972 and this year
he was named The Associated Press
S^C Coach of the Year.
