SPECIAL NOTICE
not enough
for play-offs
By TONY GALLUCCI
Staff Sports Writer
The Aggies found out what it’s
like to play the number three team
in the nation last weekend. But not
before they had given Indiana a
good dose of Maroon basketball. It
was a come-from-behind victory for
the undefeated Hoosiers as they fi
nally axed the A&M forces 90-55.
Head Coach Shelby Metcalf said,
“I was really proud. Our first strin
gers really competed with their first
stringers. ”
Metcalf took a hobbled squad to
play before the largest crowd ever to
see a basketball game in Indiana.
“The heart of basketball country, ”
says Metcalf. The squad played In
diana shot for shot and a leading
27-22 late in the first half. A con
troversial call led to a scoring run for
the H(x>siers.
Barry Davis was called for block
ing, and Metcalf, in protesting, was
given a technical. Consequently the
ball was returned to Indiana
promptly scored twice without
trouble to give them seven quick
points and a two point lead.
The Hoosiers scored eight more
before the half without an answer
from the Ags and went to the dres
sing room with a 37-27 lead. The
Ags scored quickly in the second
half to cut the lead to six, but from
there on out it was all over for the
Ags as the Hoosiers showed the
style that made them a top national
contender.
Metcalf carried ten players with
him and two. Gates Erwin and Ced
ric Joseph, were injured. Erwin and
Joseph both played, though, Erwin
enough to foul out.
“Ray Roberts and Mike Floyd
played well. We had good help from
the bench,” said Metcalf. Floyd was
leading scorer for the Ags with 11.
The runaway segment of the sec
ond half was due to the fresh players
Indiana had, said Metaclf. Fourteen
players scored for the Hoosiers.
Indiana had 12 of their top 14 re
turn from last year’s fourth-ranked
team.
Bobby Knight, Hoosier forward,
said that the game was the most
physical Indiana has played this
year. That might compare to Aggie
assistant coach Norman Reuther’s
exclamation that Indiana was the
most physical team he had ever
seen. Indiana won a 74-70 overtime
barnstormer over Kansas earlier in
the season which some writers said
stripped the game to its bare essen
tials.
In the first half the Ags and
H oosiers were tied in turnovers and
field goals but the Hoosiers led by
ten in free throws made. This is pos
sibly indicative of the lopsided game
called by the Big Ten officials. Of 76
judgment calls in the game, 52 went
against the Ags.

Metcalf said the team definitely
gained confidence from the game.
“Our main concern is to get well and
stay well,” he said.
In holiday tournament action, the
Ags will first travel to El Paso for the
Sun Bowl tourney on Thursday and
Friday. The Ags will play North
western in the first round.
Northwestern should be no prob
lem for the Ags. In the other
matchup, UTEP should trounce
Miami of Ohio. Miami is rebuilding
after a 13-13 year. They boast a big
man but how far they will have come
along is unknown. UTEP, the only
Texas school ever to win an NCAA
title, will be tough as usual. They
return a good nucleus, though
short, from an 18-7 club.
The final game, probably A&M vs
UTEP should be a good one. If the
Ags use the boards to their advan
tage, they should take their first
tourney title in four years.
On Dec. 29-30 the Ags travel to
Richmond, Va. to compete in the
Virginia Commonwealth Tourna
ment. Two teams, St. Peters and
Fairfield are fair teams, but should
be easy fodder for the Ags.
Commonwealth is another mat
ter. Although the Ags easily dis
posed of them here already this sea
son, the Rams are still considered
tough. Home court advantage and
their own tourney pride should
make the Rams a tougher opponent
the second time round. Neverthe
less, this could be another tourney
title for the Ags.
By The Associated Press
The St. Louis Cardinals and Buf
falo Bills, each in the National Foot
ball League playoffs for the first
time in a long time, are expected to
be out of them in a very short time
— probably after this weekend.
If patience is a virtue, the Bills
and Cards already have one foot on
the road to New Orleans and Super
Bowl IX on Jan. 12. But, more often
than not, playoff experience has
proven a major factor in post-season
success.
Buffalo, the scourge of the old
American Football League in the
mid-1960s, when it won three
straight division titles and two
league championships, has been
waiting since 1967 to play more than
the regulation 14 games.
The Cardinals have been waiting
even longer than that. In fact, the
City of St. Louis has been waiting
forever. The last time the Cards
won a division title was back in
1948, when they called Chicago
their home. In 1947 they took the
NFL championship by beating
Philadelphia but the next year, after
repeating as Western Division
champs, the Eagles shut them out
7-0 in the title game.
The experience factor isn’t con
trolling all the odds, though. The
Miami Dolphins have been to three
straight Super Bowls and have won
the last two, but the AFC’s Eastern
champions are three-point under
dogs to the West’s best, the Raiders,
for Saturday’s game in Oakland.

Then there’s the Bluebonnet
Classic on Jan. 4 and 5. The past two
years the tourney has degraded
from one of major interest to a
sideshow. The Ags and the Cougars
have been the only drawing cards
among the like of West Texas State
and Wichita State.
still open
But this year should be a dandy.
With three major college powers in
Hawaii, Nevada-Las Vegas and the
Coogs, the Aggies should be proud
to play with any one of these teams.
A genuine Southwest Conference
claim to quality basketball will be
had if A&M finished in the top
three. It could very well be an excit
ing and productive holiday season.
LUBBOCK, Tex., (AP) — Texas
Tech Athletic Director J. T. King
turned his search elsewhere Tues
day for a head coach after Grant
Teaft bowed out of the picture. Red
Raider defensive coordinator
Richard Bell is expected to get a
long look.
Teaft, a former assistant at Tech
and a good friend of King’s, appar
ently could have had the job vacated
by Jim Carlen for the asking. Teaff
asked his name not be considered.
Numerous applications flooded
the Red Raider office but King had a
“no comment” on Tech’s next move.
Two of the applications came from
assistants in the professional ranks.
