Parkinson opened his de fense at the Watergate cover-up trial Tuesday by recalling a prosecu tion witness to testify he never told Parkinson all he knew about the break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters. Fred C. LaRue, a former Nixon campaign aide who was a key pro secution witness in the trial, tes tified that he was present when Par kinson was told that Jeb Stuart Mag- ruder had been lying when he said the break-in had been sponsored by Nixon re-election committee offi cials. LaRue said former Atty. Gen. John N. Mitchell gave Parkinson “an out-and-out assurance that what Mr. Magruder had told Mr. Parkin son was not true. ” “Did you have information that would have suggested Mr. Magruder’s statement was true?” asked Jacob Stein, Parkinson’s at torney. “Yes,” replied LaRue. “Did you speak up?” asked Stein. “No, sir,” said LaRue. La Rue also testified he could not recall Parkinson being included in any discussion of paying money to the Watergate break-in defendants. “I can give no explanation as to why Mr. Parkinson was not in cluded ... It was limited to as few people as possible,” he said. “And you never told him about it?” asked Stein. “Told him? No, sir,” replied La Rue. Parkinson was the last of the five defendants to present his defense at the trial, now in its 12th week. Chief prosecutor James F. Charged with Parkinson with conspiring to obstruct the investiga tion of the June 17, 1972, Watergate break-in are Mitchell, former White House aides H. R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman and former as sistant Atty. Gen. Robert C. Mar- dian. During his testimony, Mardian also acknowledged he had been less than honest with Parkinson when he failed to tell him all he knew about the break-in. Mardian said he gave Parkinson none of the details given him on June 21, 1972, four days after the break-in, by G. Gordon Liddy who bad outlined his entire involve ment. Mardian also acknowledged tel ling Parkinson that the civil suits could be defended “on the basis that there was no connection between the Nixon committee and the burg lars.” Costs up, hut stores dont gain WASHINGTON (AP) — The president of Safeway Stores Inc., said Tuesday that supermarket pro fits do not contribute significantly to rising food prices and said his firm seeks only “a penny for the grocer.” W. S. Mitchell, head of the nation s largest supermarket chain, said grocery store profits amount to “less than one penny per person per day in 1973 and perhaps a penny and a quarter this year.” Under questioning, however, Mitchell said supermarkets base their prices on competitors’ prices rather than their own expenses or changes in the farm prices of foods. The disclosure came after Sen. William Proxmire, D-Wis., cited i congressional study that “raises serious doubts as to the competi tiveness of this industry.” Proxmire, chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, said the committee study revealed that a supermarket chain’s highest profits and highest prices occur in geog raphical areas in which it captures the largest share of the market. He also released records showing that Safeway s net profits for the first nine months of this year range from 1.61 per cent of sales in San Fran cisco to 5.27 per cent in Seattle. Safeway captured the biggest share of the market of any grocery chain in both of those marketing regions, Proxmire said. In instances where the chain’s share of the local grocery market was smaller, its profits were less, the study disclosed. At the same time, staff aides said, its prices were lower. In regions where Safeway domi nated the market, its prices were higher “by a hair” and profits were substantially higher, aides noted. Mitchell repeatedly denied that the supermarket business is any thing but fiercelyvompetitive. Bar admits local lawyer The Texas Supreme Court ap pointed H. Jack Woods of College Station as a member of a State Bar of Texas committee to aid the Bar’s screening process in reviewing ap plicants for admission to the Bar. Woods is charged with certifying the eligibility and qualifications of applicants for admission to the Bar as part of a new Supreme Court sys tem of assuring that new lawyers meet character and fitness guidelines. Each of the 17 State Bar Districts has one district Committee, consist ing of at least 15 members from the district, appointed by the Texas Supreme Court with the assistance of State Bar president Lloyd Loc- h ridge.
