Ags first with radio;
now without station
By WALTER S. SHERMAN
Special to the Batt
In November of 1921, a small
group of Aggies broadcast the first
football game on radio. Texas A&M
College was one of the first schools
in Texas to have its own campus
radio station.
Yet, more than 50 years later,
Texas A&M University is one of a
small group of Texas universities
without campus radio stations.
This seeming contradiction came
about 17 years ago when the Texas
A&M , a third generation descen
dant of the original campus station.
The reasons given at the time for
selling the station was that A&M
lawyers feared a new federal tax
regulation would cause the state to
pay taxes on the station.
So, A&M has gone without a
campus radio station for 17 years,
but that may be corrected in the
near future.
A&M may get another campus
radio station. The catch is, how.
Radio stations don’t come cheap.
In 1957 WTAW sold for $32,257,
including its six-month-old all
automatic equipment. One must
keep in mind that WTAW was a
comparatively small, daytime
broadcast, AM station with a low
power transmitter.
The transmitter is generally con
sidered to be the most expensive
piece of radio gear. The Texas A&M
Student Government has been
working with a radio station that
saves transmitter costs.
How? Simple, no transmitter.
Student government has been
experimenting with TAMU Radio
107.5 FM. The station was set up in
September of last year as an interim
project until the Senate decides to
pay the $10,000-plus for a transmit
ter.
Student Radio gets around the
transmitter costs by being “fed” di
rectly into Midwest Video cable
lines. The signals originate in a
small studio in the back of the
Ridgecrest Barbershop. The bar
bershop is next door to Midwest
Video on Highway 6.
The studio is modestly furnished.
Egg crates, donated from the Sbisa
dining hall refuse wagons line the
walls, serving as sound buffers. Two
small turntables set on the far leg of
the horseshoe shaped desk.
“The set up that we’ve got is basi
cally an overgrown stereo, says
Dave Kirchner, head engineer.
Kirchner, his assistant Charlie
Gimarc, and the entire staff of disc
jockeys are volunteers. Kirchner s
college* expenses are partially co
vered under the GI Bill. When
asked if he would work for free if he
didn t have financial backing, he re
plied, ‘‘If I had another means of
support, sure . . . Would I do it if I
were a regular student, working my
way through school? I don’t know.
The only regularly paid person at
Student Radio is station manager
Jim James. James says he gets $25 a
week and usually puts in about 50 to
60 hours a week.
James says his duties encompass
everything from selling advertise
ments to making sure someone is at
the station all the time. He also is
working with the student govern
ment radio governing board on
going open air.
James is head staff member and
says, “There are so many good peo
ple working here, that if I see I can’t
do something, one of them can. We
have got about the finest staff of
people you will find anywhere.”
A radio station is only as success
ful as its audience is receptive and
one of Student Radi'o’s newer DJ’s,
Andy Kring, said he got 12 requests
and gave away a free album in two
hours one night.
James contrasted this with KTRU
in Houston, Rice University' s open
air station. James visited KTRU re
cently and in the hour-and-a-half he
was diere, only one request was cal
led in.
Unscrupulous businessmen
list hundreds on ‘goose list’
AUSTIN (AP)—About 300 to 350
elderly Texans are on a “goose” or
victims list used by unscrupulous
insurance salesmen in South Texas,
the head of a State Insurance Board
task force said Tuesday.
Hector DeLeon said at a news
conference he could not say for sure
how widespread the use of such lists
might be.
What the lists actually show, he
said, are the dates on which hos
pitalization policies carried by cer
tain old people —- usually between
75 and 85 — expire.
The gimmick, he said, is to sell
these people one-year policies,
changing the coin pan y each year. A
salesman’s commission is 80 percent
in a policy s first year, so it is to his
advantage to switch a customer’s
company every year.
Agents who use this scheme usu
ally fast talk their customers into
signing their names on the applica
tion forms, DeLeon said. Then the
agent fills out the rest, portraying
the client as an excellent health risk.
But when the policyholder goes to
the hospital, the insurance company
learns of pre-existing ailments and
refuses to pay under a standard pol
icy clause, DeLeon said.
Insurance commissioner Don
Odum said old people victimized by
such schemes usually think they are
simply renewing their current
policies.
He said he believed some sales
men exchange lists, and added that
he had heard of “goose lists since
1959.
Board chairman Joe Christie cal
led the news conference to say, in
effect, that there was nothing new in
recent published reports of a crack
down, including two felony convic
tions, on unscrupulous insurance
salesmen in the Cuero area. He re
leased a packet of news releases and
other documents showing the board
had been working on the problem
since late August, including crea
tion of the task force headed by De-
Christie also disclosed that he had
detailed board investigator Howard
McRae on a full-time basis to help
Dist. Atty. Wiley Cheatham of
Cuero, who had asked for assistance
in handling insurance complaints in
that area.
Christie stressed that the two
men convicted of felonies in connec
tion with insurance frauds in the
Cuero area were not licensed insur-
Leon.
Retail sales
drop slightly
WASHINGTON (AP) — The
government reported Tuesday that
retail sales dropped last month by 1
percent, despite the approach of the
busy holiday shopping season.
The Commerce Department
computed total retail sales for
November at an annual rate of $47.1
billion after adjustment for seasonal
variation.
The biggest drop came in the
durable-goods categoiy, which in
cludes automobiles and home ap
pliances. Sales of durable goods to
taled $13.3 billion, a 3 percent re
duction from October and a 6 per
cent drop from November a year
ago.
