On Rockefeller Senate OK expected WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Judiciary Committee com pleted its hearings on Nelson Rockefeller’s nomination to be vice president Thursday and set it for a vote next week. Committee approval of the nomi nation appears certain, with only about 10 of the 38 members consi dered likely to vote against it. A final House vote will be held the follow ing week. With the Senate expected to con firm the nomination overwhelm ingly next Tuesday, the House vote—also certain to be favorable—will give the nation a vice president for the first time Legislators indicted CHICAGO (AP) — Ten former or current state legislators were among 18 persons indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday and accused of accepting thousands of dollars in exchange for proposing special in terest legislation. In the most sweeping of three in dictments, 15 persons were accused in an alleged $80,000 payoff scheme that involved legislation to increase allowable load limits on Illinois roads for the benefit of the ready- mix cement industry. A second indictment charged three lawmakers, including one who was charged in the first indict ment, with conspiracy to commit extortion and mail fraud in connec tion with legislation adverse to the car rental agency. AUTO INSURANCE FOR AGGIES: Call: George Webb Farmers Insurance Group since Aug. 9, when former Presi dent Richard M. Nixon resigned. It will also, for the first time in the nation’s history, give it a president and vice president who were not elected but achieved office through the provisions of the 25th Amend ment for filling a vacancy in the vice presidency. The Judiciary Committee hear ings ended as they began, with Roc kefeller on the stand defending his generous cash gifts to friends and associates in public life and promis ing not to make any more if he be comes vice president. Rockefeller, who spent the first two days of the hearings testifying, was recalled on the ninth and final day to give both him and the com mittee a chance to tie up loose ends. One thing some members wanted to know more about was a $30,000 loan made by Rockefeller’s brother, Laurance, in 1961 to William Mil ler, then national Republican party chairman. Neither brother had been able to recall the loan in previous appear ances but Laurance mentioned it Wednesday, saying he had forgot ten about it, but must have made it at Nelson’s request. Nelson, who said he also had for gotten about it, recalled that Miller mentioned needing money to re main as party chairman—then an unpaid position—and that he refer red him to Laurance, who specialized in venture capital in vestments. Miller later repaid all but $1,900 of the loan, which Laur ance canceled. In Buffalo, N.Y., Miller said Thursday there were no strings at tached to the loan. “I didn’t really know Laurance particularly,’’ said Miller. “The loan followed many conversations I’d had with Nelson. We were very close friends.” He said later Nelson volunteered the loan. “He said he would talk to his brother Laurance and Laurance would arrange it. “He asked for not a single thing, not before, not afterwards. He didn’t even ask me to vote for him, ” Miller said.
