■ random survey was taken to
Xer how the student body felt
jerning the article,
lost of the students commented
[werepleased to see A&M gain
: national recognition and pub
licity.
Sophomore biology major Nancy
Gardner read the story in the bar
bel shop. I was proud to see some
thing in there about us. It rep
resented our traditions really well
and I thought it was favorable to
wards A&M.”
Fat Focht, a sophomore
economics major, said “I was sur
prised it was in there. No one pays
attention to Aggies until they assert
themselves. They have to show they
are better all around.”
I was so tickled for us to be men
tioned in Sports Illustrated,” said
freshman journalism student Pat
Haines, “It flattered us.
I believe it was a good deal be
cause we received national recogni
tion, said Doug Reinhart, a fresh
man in political science. “It s about
time, we’ve been down so long.”
A comparison was made by a few
students between the current story
and a previous article done by
Mademoiselle magazine. According
to first year chemistry major Peggy
Hughes the Mademoiselle story was
“an infuriating article. It acted like
we were country bumpkins. It was
just one cut after the other.”
Agreeing with Hughes was Cindy
Walters a junior horticulture stu
dent. She said, T had a bad experi
ence with the Mademoiselle story.
It didn’t get the feeling of the school
at all.” In contrast she believes the
Sports Illustrated article “would
give other people the right idea”
about A&M.
As for particular details included
in the three page feature some stu
dents such as Van Gardner, a junior
horticulture major, complimented
the pictures. Others, like agricul
tural engineering student Dan Mil
ler, enjoyed the Aggie jokes. Jimmy
Clack, a freshman in civil engineer
ing, liked the paragraph about how
the names suited some of the Aggie
players.
There were a few unfavorable
comments however, especially from
the women’s side. Walters disag
reed with how the story “depicted
women as Maggies” because of the
“bad connotation” involved with the
title Maggies.
Walters also disagreed with how
the article “gave the wrong impres
sion of the student body” by the
pictures. One of the pictures
showed a Corps sophomore, his
date and Reveille, the Aggie mas
cot. Walters argued that this may
have given the idea that the student
body was all Corps.
Despite these few criticisms, the
general opinion of the article was a
favorable one. The timing of the
story proves what having a success
ful football team can do for a school’s
publicity.
One Aggie summed it up by say
ing, “You never heard anything
about us, until we started winning.”
Jinx or not, Sports Illustrated ap
parently won’t lose any readers at
Texas A&M.
Tech has to move
ball against Baylor
THE BATTALION Page 11
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1974
LUBBOCK, Tex. (AP) — Texas
Tech coach Jim Carlen said Monday
that his Red Raiders are going to
have to do something to Baylor this
Saturday that no one else has been
able to do this year—and that’s
move the football.
"Nobody has really moved the
football on Baylor,” Carlen told a
noon press conference. “Baylor’s
defense plays real well together and
with a lot of enthusiasm. I credit
much of Baylor’s defense success to
Corky Nelson, Baylor’s new defen
sive coordinator. I wish he had
stayed in Tyler.”
Carlen went on to say he wasn’t
surprised at Baylor’s win over
Texas. “They were playing in Waco,
and when you have a quarterback
like Neal Jeffrey, you have a lot of

Carlen indicated that Seminole
sophomore Don Roberts would
start at quarterback and George
West junior Cliff Hoskins at fullback
against the Bears after their perfor
mances in a 28-0 win over TCU last
Saturday in Lubbock.
“Roberts generated our offense
against TCU when he came in for
Tommy Duniven,” Carlen said.
“We ll play the hot hand and right
now Don has it. Hoskins earned his
starting spot against Baylor with his
play against TCU (102 yards on 13
carries).”
The game will be a crucial South
west Conference tilt as Baylor is 3-1
in SWC play and Tech is 3-2. Tech
already has accepted a bid to the
Peach Bowl, but that would change
if it gets a Cotton Bowl bid.
