The U.S. and Argentina have ag reed to the joint use of the research vessel “Islas Orcadas” which will permit completion of the Antarctic oceanographic surveys begun in 1963 and the start of a five-year biological oceanography program in the Southern Ocean. The cruise, scheduled to begin Nov. 20 and last through Dec. 30, has been postponed at least two weeks. Scientists involved will be from search solar radiation in the cruise area. Biological primary productiv ity in the ocean depends, in part, on the radiation environment. This is tied to other researchers work by the Scripps scientists and inves tigators from the Argentine Antarc tic Institute. He will employ devices to deter mine the amount of standing vege tation in any particular part of the ocean. The amount of green light reflected from the interior of the water will tell the amount of chlorophyll which gives the poten tial of plant life in the water, and therefore the total life that could exist there. “This is the first cruise of a five- year plan to study the physical properties of the water, its biology, chemistry together with solar radia tion,” Franceschini said. “If we ever want to control the ocean, we ll first have to be able to predict what it is going to do,” he * said. “Before we can predict, we have to know how the systems in the ocean work. ” One day ..... ..IQe per word Minimum charge—$1.00 Classified Display $1.50 per column inch each insertion DEADLINE 3 p.m. day before publication FOR RENT FOR SALE OFFICIAL NOTICE ■'’•'I SPECIAL NOTICE Texas A&M, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Argentine Antarctic Institute. They will study the area of the Argentine Continen tal Shelf, Drake Passage, Bransfield Strait and the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. The two major objectives of the biological program are the descrip tion of the entire food chain in An tarctic waters and investigations of the adaptation and response of the marine organisms in the Antarctic waters. Dr. Sayed Z. El-Sayed will be continuing his studies on primary productivity in the icy seas, started nearly 12 years ago with the Argen tine scientists. El-Sayed hopes that his study of the Antarctic marine ecosystem will lead to a better understanding of the food chain in the southern waters. “Marine phytoplankton is the basis of the food chain in the ocean, ” El-Sayed pointed out. “Their level of production will regulate the amount of life in a given ecosys tem. ” Dr. Guy Franceschini will re- A&M begins study WE BUY BOOKS EVERY DAY!! S. carrying oil and gas to land and industrial and carrying municipal waste out to sea. The tremendous forces produced by the ocean cause up to a 25 per cent failure in these pipes whose pollution can endanger the beaches, marine life and health of the resi dents. Dr John Herbich, head of ocean engineering at Texas A&M, is lead ing a research project tackling the problem of protecting these pipelines. In the labs he and his assistants reproduce the waves and the winds and the slope of the beach in long tanks to duplicate ocean conditions. “These forces from the waves have been known to move pipe, ten feet in diameter and weighing 80 tons, as much as 150 feet away from its original position,” Herbich said. “A serious problem is the effect of wave-induced pressures and forces on the sediments around pipelines,” Herbich said. “Waves can produce submarine landslides that have actually damaged two offshore production platforms.” He went on to say the prime fac tors affecting the design of underwa ter pipelines are environmental considerations and construction methods. The team is helping de velop a comprehensive bibliog raphy on the design and specifica tions aspects of underwater pipelines. "Hurricanes have been known to tie them up in pretzels,” he said. “As a result, oil spills have resulted Bulletin board and nuclear power plants, sewage and LNG plants couldn’t operate.
