1 hat good old Baylor line gave
and gave and finally died on the
teeth of the Aggie defense as the
Maroon Maulfia did everything
but punt.
By beating the Bears 20-0, the
Farmers stretched their streak of
not allowing a score to eight quar
ters. In Southwest Conference play
A&M has allowed only one touch
down in three games. Another
streak maintained by the Aggies is
not allowing the opponent to score
in the second quarter in any of their
games this year.
So complete was the domination
of the Aggies over Baylor that the
Bears reached A&M territory twice,
never in the second half. A&M ran
74 offensive plays to 49 for Baylor.
The Aggies held the Bears to 149
yards total offense and to four first
downs.
Baylor Head Coa,ch Grant Teaff
complimented A&M as being more
physical than Oklahoma. Baylor
running back Steve -Beaird (who
netted 71 of the Bear’s 105 rushing
yards) tabbed the Aggies as having
the best defense he had faced.
The closest Baylor came to scor
ing was in the fourth quarter when a
black and white spotted dog
reached the A&M twenty. Rather
symbolically however, a small boy
came off the Aggie sideline to lead
the dog from the field.
Adding to the Bears’ misfortune
were four turnovers. Jackie Wil
liams snatched his third intercep
tion of the year and Pat Thomas
picked off his fifth. Warren Trahan
intercepted the first pass of his
career and made it count by carry
ing it across from the one.
“It was a screen pass and I just
tipped it and caught it,” said the
Aggies’ big tackle. “I figured tbey
would check off so I dropped back
and the ball came right to me.” It
marked the first time Trahan had
scored in his career.
The Aggie offense was able to
drive almost at will on the Bears but
were never able to sustain the drive
long enough to cross the goal line.
A&M got one break when halfback
Batt sports
Bubba Bean fumbled after a ten
yard gain and Carl Roaches,
scooped up the loose pigskin and
raced 56 yards for a score.
It was the only six pointer the Ags
could manage against a Bear de
fense that toughened within their
own thirty. Randy Haddox made
sure the Aggies did not come from
the well dry, however, by kicking
field goals of 42 and 41 yards.
Also in the kicking department
for A&M, Mark Stanley improved
his national standing by averaging
47.3 yards a kick on four attempts.
He is ranked fourth nationally.
With Bean leading the way, the
offense gained 310 yards rushing.
And the Aggies again showed they
could pass when they had to by bit
ting several key passes for first
downs.
But it was the defense that made
what was supposed to be a close
game a mismatch. The Baylor of
fense was so totally negated by the
Farmer defense that they could
muster only one first down in the
entire second half.
The game puts A&M alone atop
the SWC since SMU fell to Texas
Tech. However, one slip could be
fatal because Texas, Tech, Baylor
and SMU remain just one game off
the pace.
