Trahan convinces opponents of Aggie desire for victory By MARK WEAVER Staff Sports Writer Contrary to popular belief, de fensive tackle Warren Trahan does not chew nails as an appetizer. He isn’t locked in a cage all week and fed frog legs before the TCU game or bacon before playing Arkansas. But it would be hard to convince the Aggies’ previous opponents other wise. Trahan, a 6-4, 268 pound senior from Duson, La., has been a dif ficult man to maintain by Ag oppo nents. He has 30 unassisted tackles and 16 assists for a total of 46. He has caused two fumbles, sacked oppos ing quarterbacks seven times and has 17 tackles for 66 yards in losses. Against TCU, Trahan led a devas tating Aggie defense that held the Froggies to minus 58 yards rushing. He sacked the quarterback three times for 21 yards in losses. “He’s a very good pass rusher,” Coach Emory Bellard said of Trahan. “He’s got the burning de sire to get to the passer and the quickness and speed to get by the linemen.” Last year Trahan had a good sea son, but Bellard says his improve ment is mainly because he is able to use both hands. “Last year Warren had two bad wrists and I mean really bad,” Bel lard said. “He had a broken bone in one and a severe sprain in the other. It is almost impossible to play de fense when you can’t use your hands, but he did a pretty good job.” “The key to our defense is Trahan,” linebacker Ed Simonini said. “I don’t think many people realize just how good he is. ” As the season progresses, people are beginning to notice the brilliant play ofTrahan. Over national televi sion he keyed an Aggie defense that shutout the ninth ranked Texas Tech team until late in the fourth quarter. With the Aggie defense as tough as it is, opposing teams can’t afford Bonds goes to Yankees NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball’s inter-league trading period got off to an impressive start Tuesday when the New York Yankees sent Bobby Murcer to the San Francisco Giants for Bobby Bonds in an exchange of two of the game’s biggest stars. to double team anyone every play. This is one big reason players like Trahan, Simonini and linebacker Garth Ten Napel continue to have good games. If the offense can curb its turnov ers and the defense continues its fine play, the Aggies will be a tough team to beat. And Warren shouldn’t be too upset if Baylor doesn’t offer him a second helping of bear meat and nails.
