Representatives of the Bryan-Col-
lege Station Apartment Owner Asso
ciation will testify in favor of the
right-to-work law before a state leg
islative committee in Austin next
week.
The law, say its advocates, gives a
man the right to work without join
ing a union. Opponents say the law
gives a man the right to work for
substandard wages.
“The main reason we are opposed
to a closed-shop is that we feel that
bonded personnel working on a proj
ect will raise our costs and therefore
raise rents across the board,” said
Jim Jett, association president.
“I recognize the arguments on
both sides and can see their validity,
but I don’t think it’s a big enough
problem to deny someone freedom of
choice,” said Richard Smith, associa
tion member and former owner of
the Briar Oaks Apartments.
“My personal philosophy is that
I’m in favor of the right-to-work
law,” Smith said. “1 think a union
membership should be voluntary.”
In the past, the apartment owners
in the area could expect to lose up
to $3,000 during the summer months,
but because of the tax structure and
utility rates some have begun to lose
money during the school year, Jett
Hues Corporation,
Trapeze to appear
Town Hall presents The Hues
Corporation and Trapeze in the
year’s first Special Attraction, to
night at 8:00 in G. Rollie White
Coliseum.
The Hues Corporation recently hit
the top of the charts with “Rock the
Boat.”
Trapeze, a British import, concen
trates on playing rock. They just
finished a tour in the British Isles.
The four member band has recently
released a new album, “Hot Wire.”
“Hues” has cut other hits in re
cent years, besides “Rock the Boat”.
These are “Freedom for the Stallion”
and “Miracle Worker”. In addition,
they have put together a live act for
nightclubs and concerts.
Trapeze will include in their per
formance such hit tiines as “Back
Street Love”, “Take It On Down the
Road” anti "Midnight Flyer”.
Admission will be $2 with Activity
Card, $3 for reserved seats anti $2.50
for date and general admission ticket.
The next Town Hall presentation
will be a special Ray Stevens concert,
Nov. 1.
Elite RV’s admits

The Ross Volunteers inducted 76
juniors Thursday night in a ban
quet at the Aggieland Inn.
State Rep. Bill Presnal was guest
speaker.

the Corps of Cadets, act as escort

said.
“Students complain if the rents
go up — I complain if the rents go
up, too,” Jett said, “and a closed
shop would just continue the escala
tion of the rents.”
“If I have to hire a bonded pool
cleaning service out of Houston as
opposed to a student who is quali
fied but doesn’t have a document,
the additional costs will have to be
passed in the rent,” Jett said.
Gov. Dolph Briscoe reaffirmed
Thursday his support of the right-
to-work law. He said he would veto
any repeal of the law or passage of
an agency shop bill.
Briscoe said that as a practical
matter, he doubts the legislature
would pass a bill on either issue.
The association has been studying
the Bryan-College Station utility
structure. “We’re trying to get an
equitable deal for ourselves and our
residents,” Jett said. "We feel that in
some areas we have been discrimi
nated against.”
The association is currently study
ing utility rates to see if apartment
owners are being assessed fairly.
Presently, owners must pay a per
apartment garbage pick-up fee al
though, Jett said, one large garbage
can services many apartments and
the fee is inappropriate. If the rates
could be assessed more fairly the
savings could be passed on to the
residents, he said.
The administration of the fuel
adjustment fee involving area apart
ments is also being questioned by
the association) Jett said. “We’re not
trying to get them (city utilities) —
we just want to reach a fair situa
tion.”
