Shows strength of SWC
Southwest Conference race
promises to be a wild one
By MIKE BRUTON
Sports Editor
COMMENT:
Every time I look at the South
west Conference football standings
I pinch myself to make sure I’m not
dreaming. Last week really left me
wondering how this wild SWC race
will end.
Preseason sports forecasters
picked the upcoming Arkansas-
Texas game to have the same stature
as the Big Shootout of 1969. But the
biggest shootout of the 1974 season
in the SWC may take place at Waco
surprised by Baylor Saturday. It’ll
be hard for the Horns to build up
the extra adrenalin two weeks in a
row.
Rice lost to Notre Dame 10-3 on
the scoreboard, but they won a
mountain of respect otherwise. The
Owls played 57 minutes of tie foot
ball with the Irish, and Cornelius
Walker left South Bend a sure can
didate for All-American. At least in
Ara Parsegian’s mind.
SMU is right at the top of the
SWC heap with A&M, and Baylor
with a 1-0 record. It’s only fair since
( Batt sports )
on Oct. 26, since Baylor came from
behind to beat the Hogs 21-17 in
Fayetteville, this past weekend.
Nobody asked the Texas Aggies
about their intentions to win the
SWC crown, so they tried to show
the whole nation with a very solid
performance against the Red Raid
ers. A&M looked very strong
against Tech, but don’t count the
Raiders out, they’ll be in the thick of
things for the rest of the season.
The perennial SWC powers, Ar
kansas and Texas will be fighting for
survival rather than determining
who’ll be king of the hill in the
Southwest. A second conference
loss at this point would almost mean
certain elimination from conten
tion. Texas proved that they aren’t
ready for the junk pile by playing an
exceptional game against the awe
some Sooners last week losing
16-13. Arkansas will come out sw
inging from the ground after being
Sport in
formative
stages
Orienteering, a new sport, is in
the formative stage.
“It’s glorified map reading against
time,” commented Army Maj. Joe
Carothers of the Military Science
Department. Carothers is taking
calls and inquiries about the sport at
the Trigon or 845-1622.
Orienteering was imported from
Europe and gained adherents from
Boy and Girl Scouts, college stu
dents, ecology buffs, forest rangers
and ROTC cadets. It is an intercol
legiate athletic event in the north
and northeast.
Maj. Carothers would like to form
a team to compete soon at Northeast
Louisiana State. The sport involves
being able to locate checkpoints in
wilderness terrain using only a to
pographic map and compass.

football fans in Dallas can’t talk
about the Cowboys anymore.
Who’ll be the eventual champion
of the SWC? Well, you got eight
guesses, and your guess is as good as
mine. If Texas A&M can stay clear of
injuries, and keep their teenage,
lefty quarterback in gear to execute
the T-Bone with few turnovers, it’ll
be happy days on the Brazos.
Texas, Arkansas and Texas Tech
all have fine football teams and
could very well finish this season
without another loss. Baylor figures
to be somewhere in the line of con
sideration for championship teams,
with the strong running of Steve
Beard and a stubborn defense led
by Derrel Luce. Don’t forget about
SMU who’ve had their problems
with probations, diseases and
heavens knows what else. They
probably figure it’s time for some
body else to have some problems.
Rice has been known to win some
big games in strange ways and TCU
will be hiding in the bushes waiting
to ambush some team en route to
the SWC championship. So hold on
to your seat, because the 1974 ride
through the Southwest Conference
will be a rough one.

softballers
take third
The women’s softball team placed
third this weekend in the Lamar In
vitational Tournament.
First place went to the University
of Texas at Arlington. Texas
Women’s University captured sec
ond place.
In the first game A&M took
Stephen F. Austin by a score of 8-5.
Robin Oakley pitched the game.
TWU won the second game 6-5
putting A&M in the loser’s bracket.
A&M led TWU 5-0 into the bottom
of the sixth before TWU picked up
three runs.
A&M then went to bat in the top
of the seventh, but TWU held the
Ags to their five-run score. In the
last play of the game, TWU brought
in three runners taking the game.
In play against Sam Houston,
freshman pitcher, Kim Bellamy put
A&M into the semi-finals, beating
Sam Houston State 4-3 and Univer
sity of Houston, 8-7. These were
Bellamy’s first college career wins.
In the game which put A&M in
third place, TWU again came from
behind in the last inning, winning
8-6.
The softballers travel to Nacog
doches this weekend to compete for
the state championship.
