Ags try to break Tech jinx
By MARK WEAVER
Staff Sports Writer
The Aggies are agoing to try to
break some Texas Tech winning
streaks Saturday and begin one for
themselves.
The Red Raiders currently hold a
six-game winning streak over the
Aggies. The last time the Ags beat
Tech was in 1967, the year they won
the Southwest Conference and the
Cotton Bowl.
Tech also has a 13-game string
without a loss, including this year’s
victory over the U niversity of Texas.
The last game they lost was against
UT last year in Austin.
The Red Raiders have done well
this season, their only blemish
being a 21-21 tie with New Mexico
University. They have beaten Iowa
State, 24-3, Texas, 26-3 and Ok
lahoma State, 14-13.
The game has been a sellout for
nearly two weeks. This will be the
first sellout, other than Texas, since
1956 against Texas Christian Uni
versity. Kyle Field seats 48,000
comfortably.
The Aggies, after losing to un
ranked Kansas 28-10 last week, will
attempt to get back on the winning
track as they begin conference play.
This is the best start the Aggies have
had since 1957 when they were
ranked No. 1 in the nation before
being upset by Rice 7-6.
A&M hasn’t exactly played the
easiest teams in the country this
year. Kansas is expected to be one of
the top teams in the Big Eight.
Washington has a strong passing
team and gave Texas trouble with
328 yards in the air.
LSU was ranked in the top ten,
but their loss to the Aggies must
have been a real blow since they
haven’t won a game besides their
opener against Colorado. And
Clemson received votes this week
to be in the top 20 teams of the
nation.
The Ags enter the Tech game
with defensive end Paul Hulin the
only doubtful player. He sprained
his knee against LSU, but is begin
ning to move around much better
on the field.
Aggie coach Emory Bellard is 0-2
against the Red Raiders and Tech
coach Jim Carlen is 4-0 against the
Ags. This will be the 33rd meeting
of the teams. A&M has won 17 and
Tech has won 14. There has been
one tie in the series.
The Red Raiders will operate
their offense from the T with what
they call the “Tech Option.” This is
similar to the veer-type offense the
Ags have faced in their first four
games.
Tech’s offense will be led by
sophomore quarterback Tommy
Duniven. He was one of the main
question marks as to the success of
this year’s Tech team. He has done a
good job replacing last year’s quar
terback Joe Barnes.
Duniven is a top notch passer and
has been tearing some opposing
secondaries apart. Against Texas,
Duniven was seven for seven for 145
yards. This included one pass for 77
yards and a touchdown and a key 46
yard pass that led to a touchdown.
Duniven’s main receiver on the
long patterns will be flanker Lawr
ence Williams, who did most of the
receiving damage against Texas.
Williams led the nation in kickoff
returns in 1972. He caught 19 pas
ses for 233 yards last year for four
touchdowns. He has been picked as
a pre-season All-Conference player.
The Aggies will have to maintain
Duniven and his corps of receivers if
they plan to compete this weekend.
Last week against Kansas the Ags
had problems in their secondary
and the Jayhawks took advantage of
these problems. The Aggies, if they
continue their fumbling ways, can
not afford the big pass plays that the
Red Raiders are capable of making.
The man that has been getting the
big running yardage for Tech is tail
back Larry Isaac. He has averaged
88.3 yards per game and 4.4 yards
per carry. He has scored six touch
downs in four games, ranking him
13th nationally in scoring.
The Red Raiders also have a de
fense to complement its offense.
Tech s opposing teams have been
averaging only 10 points a game
while the Ags opposing teams have
been averaging 1414 a game.
Tackle Ecomet Burley, All-
Southwest Conference in 1973,
leads the Tech defense with his size
and speed. Coach Bellard said that
Burley was one of the quickest
linemen in the nation. Defensive
end Tommy Cones was second team
All-SWC last year and has been a
big man stopping the wishbone op
tion.
Texas Tech is probably one of the
most balanced teams A&M has
played so far. Their offense can run
as well as they pass, which is similar
to the Kansas team. Their defense
can cause other teams to have mis
takes and the Aggies have been
making quite a few lately.
Tech has won three games in
Lubbock and the home crowd was
probably a big plus in their favor,
especially in their one point victory
over Oklahoma State. Their tie
came in New Mexico where the
crowd was anti-Tech.
A&M has had just one home
game, but is still 3-1. The Aggies
will have the home crowd on its side
and Tech has yet to win on the road
this year. And this may be their
toughest road game all year. >

Spirit line formation planned for Saturday
Preparations are being made to
form the spirit line for Saturday’s
football game with Texas Tech.
The yell leaders are trying to get
the Corps and all civilian students to
meet in front of Cain Hall Saturday
morning and stretch to Kyle Field.
There is a possibility the midnight
yell practice will be filmed by ABC.
In addition to today’s yell prac
tice, one will be held 5 p. m. Friday.
These extra yell practices are ar
ranged by the yell leaders to en
courage the Aggies for their upcom
ing game with the Red Raiders. A
street march in front of the athletic
dorm was made Tuesday to kickoff
the week’s spirit-boosting events.
