Hawks start comeback against Tech
By PAUL McGRATH
“The Hawks will be back.”
That’s what James Daniels said
pncerning the defensive
scondary’s newest challenge-
Texas Tech wide receiver Lawr-
ice Williams.
I Williams possesses 9.7 speed and
Bis the hands and the moves to
pake many a defensive back dizzy.
B four games Williams has ten re-
Bptions for 218 yards. Among the
ten catches are four touchdowns of
mhieh three were in the first half
atainst Texas.
■ Last year, Williams burned the
aggies for two scores and 70 yards.
According to Daniels, Williams was
able to take advantage of a couple of
mistakes in the secondary.
On the first pass, Tech quarter
back Joe Barnes was scrambling and
hit Williams when Tim Gray ran up
to cover the run. Williams’ other
score came when Daniels and Jackie
Williams got confused on their
coverage and ended up covering the
same man.
Either Gray or Pat Thomas will
have the task of handling Williams
depending on which side he lines up
on.
He has graceful moves,” says
Daniels. “You never know what he’s
going to do until he does it. He just
glides.”
The Hawks face Williams’ chal
lenge this week after a disappoint
ing game against Kansas. Scott
McMichael and Emmett Edwards
played as if they owned the Aggies.
“We know that we have to do a
better job than we did against Kan
sas. We suffered a mental break
down,” said the Aggie safety.
Daniels said Williams and Ed
wards are quite similar in moves and
speed. Williams, who was second
team All-Southwest Conference last
year, offers another threat in his
kick returning. He was sixth in the
nation in that department in 1973.
This adds weight to Daniels de-

scription of him as being a “gameb-
reaker. ”
Despite the talents of Williams,
the secondary feels no added pres
sure. “We re not going in with the
intention of double covering him
but will on some occasions,” said
Daniels.
Daniels expects the Red Raiders
to pass a lot if the Aggie offense can
maintain a rushing attack and the
defense can contain Tech’s running
game. Another factor Williams
plays is that he usually draws a big
enough crowd to leave other Tech
receivers open. Plays where Tech
quarterback Tommy Duniven rolls
toward Williams and throws back
across the field were examples men
tioned by Daniels.
The Hawks have been viewing
films of Williams constantly because
they know he is the man the Red
Raiders go to when they need a big
play. This is not to say that stopping
Williams will insure an Aggie vic
tory but it will be one of the decid
ing factors.

victory—a thrashing of defending
champion Texas. But Arkansas’ 49-0
throttling of Texas Christian last
week served notice the Razorbacks
are just as potent as predicted by the
preseason experts.
The Red Raiders are in College
Station and their “host, if you wish

their fifth-ranked toe on Kansas last
week.
The Aggies are mad and the
oddsmakers say the homefield ad

a four-point favorite over Tech in
the game which will be televised
coast-to-coast.
“You can bet we 11 have our hel

Tech,” was the dire warning from
Aggie offensive tackle Glenn Buj-

A&M Coach Emory Bellard’s
crew features the running of Bubba

ents a more balanced attack built
around the passing of Tommy
Duniven, the receiving of Lawr
ence Williams, and running of tail
back Larry Isaac.
Tech has a 9-4 edge over A&M
since joining the SWC in 1960.
Baylor’s game at Arkansas is no

the conference coming out for
Baylor which has compiled a 2-2

Your background in veterinary medicine and
public health qualifies you for it. and we have the
"cities" that need you. We are referring to the vari
ous Air Force bases. Their populations can go up
to thousands of men. women and children.
As a Veterinary Officer in the Air Force, a vital
member of the Health Care Team, it will be your
job to provide workable preventive measures in
many areas of public health.
You'll be concerned with food inspection, food
preparation, food storage, sanitation, and the pre
vention of zoonoticdiseases by breaking the chain
of infection from animal to man.
I n brief, if your interest is in the public health type
of veterinary practice, it would be difficult to find
a better opportunity for experience in the field.
The pay is good. There's opportunity for travel,
and you get a 30-day paid vacation right from the
first year.
Objectively and subjectively, it all may add up to
just the kind of opportunity and responsibility that
would interest you. Certainly, it's something worth
looking into further. Why not write for more de
tailed information? Mail in the coupon.
