Page 4 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1974 National champs open season in St. Louis Ruggers win second place By TONY GALLUCCI Staff Sports Writer The national intercollegiate champion rugby side opened their 1974-75 season this past weekend by taking a second place in the St. Louis Invitational Tournament. The white side returned with a Sportfolio 2-1 record against strong amateur non-collegiate teams. The Ags won the first match against a heavily favored Chicago Lions side. The Aggies showed out standing defensive strength in a goal line stand that lasted most of the first half. The score at half was 0-0. The Ags broke the match open in the second half on a score by Rod ney Smith. By MIKE BRUTON This season in the Southwest Conference seems to be one of those weird years. There are a lot of good things about it. There were 2.7 miles of real estate gained by six SWC teams Saturday, which brings to mind the Arkansas defense. While the six games totaled 4,193 yards and 275 points, the Razorbacks were getting their second succes sive shutout with a 49-0 victory over TCU for a confer ence opener. This game followed a 60-0 ambush over Tulsa. How do you like this for strange occurrences, SMU ran up 505 yards on Oregon State and took over the total offense lead in the SWC. But Texas A&M, Texas, Arkan sas, and Texas Tech all average over 300 yards per game. The SWC offenses must be strong believers in the run, since six of the top ten rushers are gaining five yards or more per carry. Our own Bubba Bean still holds the lead he’s held all year, averaging 107.5 yards per game and 7.0 per carry. , All in all, the Southwest Conference is off to a good start this season, and if it continues to progress at the same rate, it will be one of the strongest conferences in the nation. This is good when you think of the overall sense, but it is bad when you consider A&M will have to face all the SWC teams. It promises to be an interesting race with Texas A&M, Texas, Arkansas, and Texas Tech all being top contenders. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and see what happens. I feel a lot better about making predictions in my column since I led the Batt Picks last week with a 9-1 record. So here I go with a 10-0 week. SMU makes their shortest road trip as they go to Fort Worth to take on The TCU Horned Frogs. TCU hasn’t done very well this season with a 1-3 record so far and SMU is leading the SWC in total offense. SMU BY 9. Baylor better bring out the tanks and machine guns when they go to war with Arkansas, who have proven themselves to be a top bidder for the SWC crown. The Hogs have too much defense. ARKANSAS BY 17. If anyone is willing to take a real long shot bet on Rice to defeat Notre Dame, and if you’re smart you’ll try to write it off on your income tax statement. You will surely lose. NOTRE DAME BY 24. The Texas Longhorns will really have it in for the Oklahoma Sooners when they meet in their annual shootout Saturday. But Oklahoma should have their team registered by the law as a lethal weapon. The Longhorns will have to know more than Karate to beat them. OKLAHOMA BY 14. Everyone is wondering whether the Texas Aggies can accept the Red Raider’s challenge after last week’s loss to Kansas. But I’m here to tell you that the Texas A&M football team will be ready when the clock strikes 12 Saturday. I’m sure that the Red Raiders will be ready too, but the Aggies are very hungry for a SWC champion ship. A&M BY 7. Smith scored from 25 yards out and Bruce Mills converted to give the Ags the lead 6-0. Will Edmonds jaunted 50 yards minutes later to set the Ags up, 12-0. Chicago, normally a strong offen sive team, scored to put the Lions on the scoreboard. Mills countered with a penalty kick, followed by another Chicago tally to make the final score 15-12. The Ags played under the lights the same day and lost to a powerful Kansas City team, 13-9. The Ags only scoring against KC were on three penalty tries by Mills. On Sunday, the Aggies bowled over St. Louis for second place, 14-7. A&M set the early pace and controlled the game throughout. David Eslinger scored the first try for the Ags. Mills added a penalty score to give the Ags a 7-4 halftime advantage. In the second half of play Mills added another penalty score and Tim Fitch scored for the whites.
