Williams could run into trouble with people like Lester Hayes, Wil lie Thompson, and Craig Glenden- Rodeo By MIKE BRUTON The A&M specialty teams will face their biggest challenge of the season Saturday, when Lawrence Williams, one of the nation’s best kick returners, comes to town. “The Maroon Dragoons” alias “The Goons” alias the Aggie spe cialty unit will try to exhibit the form that ranked them second na tionally last season in punt return yardage allowed with 1.3 yard aver age. Matt Freeman, who snaps the ball on punts and place kicks, voiced the sentiments of the group. “We had better coverage than we’ve had all year against Kansas,” Freeman said. “We re really ready for this one against Tech. ” Let’s hope that “The Goons” are ready because the kicking game is a very important part of a football game, especially close ones. Texas Tech and the Aggies both have great running backs behind huge block ers, and stubborn defenses. So the outcome of Saturday’s nationally televised game will probably be de termined in the kicking game. If the “Goons ’ can contain Wil liams who led the nation in kickoff returns in 1972 and finished near the top last season, and if Carl held this The annual All-Aggie Rodeo will be held this Friday and Saturday at the Aggie arena. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. both nights. A slack will be Saturday morning at 8. This is an intramural show and contestants must be TAMU stu dents, faculty or staff. Events featured in the rodeo will be calf-roping, steer wrestling, team roping, bull riding and sad- dlebronc riding for men; and barrel racing, breakaway roping and goat tying for women. The A&M Rodeo Club is sponsor ing this rodeo for the enjoyment of fellow Aggies and as a fund raising project. Profits from this rodeo will help in putting on A&M’s National Inter collegiate Rodeo Association weekend (NIRA) show next May. The NIRA is a national organization that ex tends its rodeo interests in institu tions ranging from Michigan west ward to California. TAMU is in the Southern Region which includes colleges in the east ern half of Texas and a portion of Louisiana. Cowboys and cowgirls compete as individuals and teams for their schools. Rodeos are based on a point sys tem with the top 2 teams and top 2 individuals in each event for the season going to the College National Finals Rodeo. Grady Wilkerson, who made a thunderous tackle at Baton Rouge against the Tigers, said that the “Goons” had a score to settle with Williams. “He (Williams) embarrassed us. last year when he returned a kickoff out across the 50-yard line, and we want to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Wilkerson said. David Greeno, who is usually found near the ball carrier on la returns, said that the specialtyp«, formers really take their job seti ously. "We re not starters, andcoi, ering kicks is our chance tolayilil out there, so it’s something that4 guys take pride in,” Greeno said Greeno was wrong when he that specialty team players arejj starters. Guess which is a better hedge against inflation. Guess again. There is one record at A&M that most Aggies would probably rather forget. That’s the record for the most fumbles in a game in the conference with nine in 1945. Sometimes it seems like the Ags are trying to break all the records. ***★*★*★★*★*** ★t*************************^ In 1923, the Ags had some real animals playing on their team. Ox Dietrich and Bull Johnson poked holes in the opposing lines so their back Mule Wilson could take off. That must have been back when A&M emphasized agriculture in their curriculum. The Farmers have had their ups and downs in the past. In 1898, they won their opening game against Houston High School 51-0 but lost their third game against the same team that season 6-0. ****************************************** A&M has been shut out 112 times in history, but has not been shut out in their last 33 games. The last time the Ags have been shut out was by Cincinati in 1971 by a score of 17-0. The Ags were the pre-game favorite. ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★* A number of different teams have attempted to take on the Aggies. In 1894, the Ags bounced Ball High School 14-6. In 1906, Transylvania bit into the Ags 29-6. But the Aggies came back in 1910 to put the stake in their heart 33-0. In 1901, the Ags played Baylor three times and Baylor won twice. That must have been an “unbear able” season. ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ On a more serious side, the Texas A&M Women Intercollegiate, possibly better known as the Maggie Jocks, Athletics have begun play in softball and vol leyball. They are competing and winning against some other Southwest Conference teams and need the support of all of A&M. All games will be announced in the Battal ion. The belief that common stocks (or long term Government bonds) preserve capi tal better than BB&L savings accounts simply isn’t true. In periods of inflation, this presumption is even more erroneous. The chart below tracks asset (cash-in) values of a $10,000 BB&L savings ac count, compared to the same amount of Dow Jones average industrial stocks and U.S. Treasury bonds. Note that on very few months in 9 years could an investor pull his savings out of the mar ket without a loss of principal. Through out the entire period, of course, a BB&L customer could step up to the savings window and withdraw every penny of his investment — plus accrued interest. BB&L savings accounts returned a greater yield than stocks or bonds, too. But that’s another story.
