Aggie basketball squad adds
talented junior college crop
By PAUL McGRATH
Sports Staff Writer
Head coach Shelby Metcalf
added some talented newcomers to
his 1974 basketball squad.
Five of the players are junior col
lege transfers and one is a freshman.
Although practice sessions do not
begin until October 15, both Met
calf and assistant coach Norm
Reuther, are already impressed
with what the new blood has to
offer. “We feel we have added
speed and offensive punch to the
team,” said Reuther.
“They are a very fine group of
young men. We are well-pleased
and proud of them.”
Reuther believes there is a possi
bility of any of them starting at some
point in the year. “We have five
seniors returning to the key posi
tions but they are going to have to
work. Each position is up for grabs. ”
The Aggie coaches felt they
needed immediate help and wanted
players with experience to fill the
gaps. That is the reason five of the
players are transfers.
The only freshman in the group is
Doug Mezger from Marble Falls.
He averaged 18 to 20 points a game
and around 14 rebounds. The Ag
gies selected him as a high postman.
“He’s strong and a very fine athlete,
but he will have to have time to
mature and learn the system.”
Mezger also threw the shot and ran
track in high school.
Barry Davis is a 6-5 forward from
Hill Junior College. He helped Hill
reach the national tournament
where he made the all-tournament
team. He was the Most Valuable
Player in the regional tourney.
Reuther describes him as a “bull as
well as being “a fine athlete.”
Also from Hill comes 6-7 sopho
more Steve Jones. He scored 37
points in the regional finals last
year. “He is fast and a very fine of
fensive player. We need to get him
to go to the boards more, though,”
commented Reuther.
Another forward is 6-6 Sonny

Parker from Mineral Area Junior
College where he was a two-time
All-America. “He is a gifted offen
sive player,” says Reuther, “but he
needs some polish defensively.”
Florida Junior College sends the
Aggies a small package in the form of
5-9 Cates Erwin. And the Aggies
expect big things from him. “Cates
has a lot of hustle and is very aggres
sive. He is a smart defensive player
and an overall highly intelligent
basketball player.”
These are the newcomers Metcalf
and Reuther will be counting on to
be of the most help. The only nega
tive remark in reference to them
was a need for improved defensive
play. “It’s good to put the ball in the
hoop, but you have to keep the
other guy from putting it in your
hoop also, said Reuther.
Despite the needed polish on de
fense, the addition of these players
should make the Aggie attack as po
tent as ever.
