Speaking in the keynote address of the annual Conference for Texas Junior College Journalists, Adams told the three qualities of a good investigative reporter; a sniff sense or nose for the news, curiosity and retrospect. “It’s noticing an article in your local paper and realizing that the same thing is happening some where else, ’’ Adams said. “It’s read ing news articles about an event and wondering why the slant you see hasn’t been written about before. It’s finally looking back over all the facts so far uncovered and deciding that the story is much deeper than anyone else has portrayed it. ’’ To Adams, investigative report ing gives a journalist a chance to write, not just report, “To give the reader something to identify with . . . through the use of metaphor and irony. You’re not read like the afternoon paper, but like something that will stick with the reader.’’ The conference, hosted annually by the journalism department, also featured James Meagher, assistant managing editor of the National Ob server; Tommy Miller, Houston Chronicle reporter op the Huntsville prison story, and Shelby Metcalf, Aggie basketball coach.
