He runs, catches, blocks and returns kicks THE BATTALION Page 13 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1974 Skip Walker, a quadruple threat By PAUL McGRATH Staff Sports Writer It is becoming a common sight to see Texas A&M halfback Skip Walker take a handoff, crack Jrough the line, outrace the secon- Lry to the goal line and then glance kck over a shoulder in an almost iunting gesture to the opponent. Six times this year the former Del Valle star has put up points for the Aggies. He now has 17 career touchdowns at A&M. Thus far, he leads the Ags in scoring. Among Walker s credits are listed All-district, All-Super Centex in high school and second team All- Southwest Conference in 1973. 1‘JUST LET ME sleep about five more minutes, coach.” A&M tiallhack Skip Walker reclines on blocking dummies before prac- lice, (Photo by P. Senior goalie Paul McKinzie ex- resses confidence in the Aggies hances. McKinzie believes the latch “should be a victory" for the armers. San Francisco is just the first stop an extended trip to the Pacific oast. Thursday, the Aggies play ack-to-back contests against the ollege of Sequoias and West Val- ly College with only an hour’s rest i between. Sequoias is a relatively ew team and pretty much un- nown to the Aggies. However, ley are in the process of building nd should prhve to be good com- etition. The West Valley head )ach scheduled A&M to play after le Aggies’ match with Sequoias, ivinghis team four hours rest and ie Aggies one. On Friday and Saturday the team tvels to Los Altos for the Northern California Invitational Tournament, e Aggies begin against Fresno id then meet Chico State and San seCity College. Chico and A&M e favorites in the small college di- sion of the tourney. The trip to California should be a MONDAY EVENING SPECIAL BROILED BACON WRAPPED MOCK FILET STEAK GERMAN STYLE POTATOES Choice of one . vegetable Rolls & Butter Tea or Coffee yardstick to measure the team. West Coast teams are generally more physical and have more size than most teams in the nation. For example, Chico averages about 195 lbs. per man while A&M is about 175 lbs. a man. The Aggies depend on their speed in the water and their finesse to make up for their lack of size. They will play a moving game. Offensively and defensively, the Aggies are very well-balanced when they want to be, says McKinzie. One problem of the team is their slow start. “It’ll be a fight for two quarters and then after halftime we come on strong and start doing well. Then it’s beautiful, said the 210 lb. goalie. Lee Davis, Tom Comstock and Mike Reilly have been cited for de fensive play while Oran Marksbury and Don Reeser have been making waves on the offensive side. The next home match is against the University of Texas, the first time in four years the two rivals have met each other in water polo. Not only does McKinzie feel the Aggies will be successful against the Longhorns, but he said A&M should run away with the Southwest Conference championship. “If we can just start playing a little quicker we ll do all right, said McKinzie. Walker ranks sixth on the A&M all time rushing list with 1,201 career yards. Currently, he is av eraging over 90 yards a game and better than five yards a carry. He utilizes his 9.5 speed in not only rushing but on the specialty teams by returning kickoffs. Since his partner on the return team is Carl Roaches, he manages to get the ball kicked his way more times than not. Besides his running ability. Walker is an excellent blocker Broyles pleased with Hogs (AP)—Coach Frank Broyles praised his Arkansas Razorbacks Tuesday as they prepared for their game with Texas Christian Univer sity Saturday. “We had a good practice today,” Broyles said. “The defense has im proved each day, and we have polished our passing attack on of fense.” The Southwest Conference has four teams, including Arkansas at 20th, in the Top 20 of this week’s Associated Press college football poll. “I am glad to see it,” Broyles said. “It is great for our conference. ” A surprising adjustment during the two-hour practice was linebacker Waymon Hawkins run ning at fullback. Littleton to start against Razorbacks (AP)—Ronnie Littleton, a junior from Wichita Falls, was named starting offensive halfback Tuesday for Texas Christian’s Southwest Conference game with Arkansas at Amon Carter Stadium Saturday night. “Ronnie finally supplied us with a spark that we have been needing at halfback,” said Coach Jim Shofner. “His presense takes some of the pressure off Mike Luttrell. To date, everyone has been keying on Mike but now they will have to respect Littleton too.” Wrestlers meet tonight in Coliseum The Aggie wrestling team will meet Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in G. Rollie White Coliseum, Room 232. The meeting will be organiza tional, letters will be awarded and matches will be set for the 1974-75 season. Perhaps his best game as an Aggie was against SMU last year. Walker gained 184 yards on 13 carries and scored twice. Walker’s running style is quite a contrast to his fellow halfback, Bubba Bean. Yet they are both ef fective. Bean has a long, gliding stride while Walker is characterized by short, choppy steps. Another thing that sets Walker apart is his happy-go-lucky nature. He is what is generally termed “a free spirit.’ Walkers character makes him one of the most likeable players on the team. The dance floor is another place where Walker excels. He happens to be a terrific dancer, or so say the ladies. But he will most likely go down in A&M history for the moves he makes on the gridiron. Besides with 9.5 speed you can dance with anybody. Only like Tech assistant Coach Tom Wilson says, “You d better have good hands when you play catch with Tommy or he’ll knock ’em off ” Duniven completed touchdown strikes of 77, 15 and 18 yards to Wil liams as they earned The Associated Press Southwest Conference co offensive Players of the Week award in the 26-3 upset of the Longhorns. The strong-armed, 6-foot-2, 200-pound Duniven, who is just a sophomore, once threw a ball 75 yards in the air at McLean, Tex., High School. Saturday he winged a pass 46 yards into the teeth of a 25-mile-an hour wind. Williams field it at the Texas 40 and romped to the end zone. Duniven has thrown just 28 pas ses this year and completed 21 — a whopping 75 per cent for four touchdowns. Take a few minutes to bring your bicycle in for service.
