has not had a winning football sea
son in years. This season the Tigers
are 0-4.
The problem lies not in the foot
ball team or the coaching, said two
team members.
After being waxed by Wharton,
the Tigers came back to lose the
next three games by small margins.
Most impressive of those losses was
a 12-14 decision to seventh ranked
Hearne on Friday night.
Bill McGee, senior, missed only a
single play Friday, leading the of
fense at quarterback, playing safety
on defense and handling punting
and kicking chores. It was McGee’s

tion that almost gave Consolidated
the win.
McGee has been at Consolidated
for two and a half years, playing pre
viously at a AAAA school in New
Jersey. He puts the blame for the
weak team on lack of participation.
“Somewhere along the line, bet
ween freshman and JV they get dis
interested,” said McGee.
“The coaching system has im
proved over last year. We have a
Cowboys

1-2 slate
(AP)—The Dallas Cowboys, who
have been to a record eight consecu
tive National Football League
playoffs, are off to their worst start
since 1964 and Coach Tom Landry
says they’ve picked a difficult week
to make a comeback.
“It’s been a long time since the
Cowboys have been in such a posi
tion in the Eastern Division,”
Landry said Tuesday. “It’s probably
the worst early shape we’ve ever
been in.”
Landry added, ‘‘We haven’t
picked the best week to make a
comeback with Minnesota coming
to town. They have a tremendous
team.”
Dallas was whipped 14-6 by the
New York Giants Sunday and are in
the National Conference East cellar
tied with the Giants, owning identi
cal 1-2 records.
Landry refused to blame quar
terback Roger Staubach for the
Cowboy demise but added, “That
doesn’t mean I might not change
quarterbacks in a ball game. Roger
is still my No. 1 quarterback but if
the team is playing well and the
quarterback isn’t I might make a
change hoping the next man might
have a good day.”
Craig Morton is the Cowboy bac
kup quarterback.
Staubach was booed heavily in
Texas Stadium Sunday. He was sac
ked six times and suffered three in
terceptions.
“There’s nothing wrong with
Roger that can’t be
corrected . . . he’ll never quit and
he’s my quarterback,” Landry said.

(AP)—The Cleveland Indians will
name Frank Robinson as the first
black manager in major league
baseball on Thursday, it was learned
Tuesday night.
The team plans a news confer
ence here sometime Thursday,
knowledgeable baseball sources
told The Associated Press, to offi
cially announce the choice of the
39-year-old Robinson to succeed
Ken Aspromonte, who was fired last
Friday, effective at the end of the
season.

good mixture of youth and experi
ence on the staff,” said McGee.
“The guys that come out give 100%.
I think we’re closer as a team be
cause we re small and have hand
icaps that other teams don’t have.”
Local observers seem to think
that College Station school district
football suffers because the area is
basically university-oriented. The
families in the area tend to be mid
dle class with less than usual in
terest in football.
McGee, whose family is not uni
versity oriented, says that there is
not as much emphasis on football in
this area as others. McGee adds
“The school has really supported us.
I really think they’re proud of us. ”
On the other end of the spectrum
is Mark Pantel, sophomore, who
didn’t see quite the action Friday
night that McGee did.
Pantel played on the freshman
team last year. His family is univer
sity oriented and he says that Consol
football may be weak because the
community is basically university
oriented.
Pantel said another reason Consol
has a weak team is because they
don’t have an off season in junior
high like most other systems. Pantel
says the coaching is quite adequate
and the team has always been close.
The team gives all their effort.
Both players were pleased about
the Hearne game and expressed the
idea that the team was confident
they could play with and beat
Hearne. McGee said, “We really
expected to beat them at halftime.”
Hearne held a 7-6 lead.
McGee said the team will meet
Spring this weekend with the desire
to win.
It’s that desire which keeps Con
sol football going.

Here ir a quick quiz for you Aggie
sports fans:
First question: When was the last
time Texas A&M went to the Cotton
Bowl?
Answer: 1968 against Alabama,
with the Aggies emerging victorious
21-17.
Second question: Who was the
head coach that year for A&M?
Answer: Gene Stallings.
Gene Stallings was the Aggie
head mentor for seven years and
was the last coach to guide the Ag
gies to a bowl appearance. Stallings
was replaced by Emory Bellard in
1972 and is now the defensive back-
field coach for the Dallas Cowboys.
Stallings had a 27-45-1 record with
A&M. How does he feel about his
new job?
“I miss being a head coach. I en
joyed college coaching,” said Stal
lings. “It’s an enjoyable experience
with the Cowboys but it was just as
much an enjoyable experience with
A&M.”
As for the difference between pro
and college coaching, Stallings
said, “They both have their advan
tages and disadvantages.”
Stallings remarked that the LSU
victory should be a tremendous
boost to A&M’s confidence. “Any
time you beat LSU in Baton Rouge
you’ve accomplished a lot.” Al
though many believe it was an upset
victory, Stallings said he would have
been more surprised if A&M had
lost.
Despite the circulation of re
marks that the Southwest Confer
ence has become less prestigious,
Stallings feels the SWC has always
been a strong conference and can
compete favorably with anyone.
The conference winner, added
Stallings, will probably be the team
that beats both Arkansas and Texas
in the same year. “However, it re
mains to be seen who will end up
top dog,” said Stallings.
