Mary Jane Sikes, driving her
husband’s corvette took the ladies’
division trophy by driving a 49.3
second course. Her nearest com

a BMW. '
Other winners were: class two,

The meet officials said the course
was designed to give the little cars a
chance to keep up with the bigger
ones. They sighted the driving as
good, especially from the “new
faces’ that were out. The times
were found consistently fast.
The club is planning another chal
lenge sometime in October.

The soccer team is about as stable
as the fledgling World Football
League.
This instability exists because
they need a coach.
Tony Gallucci, the team secret
ary, summed up the situation: “The
NCAA will sanction a school in soc
cer as long as it has a head coach.
Since we have no coach and there
fore are unstable, the athletic de
partment cannot support us finan
cially. As a result, we have been
scrimping for funds to pay for the
transportation to away games and
the referees needed for home
games.”
Many people are unaware that
soccer is one of the most popular
sports in the world. The game is
filled with bruising action, espe
cially in team competition in
Europe and South America. Soccer
draws among the largest crowds in
the world and boasts of some of the
highest paid stars, notably Pele of
Brazil and Johann Cruyff of the
Netherlands.

which the squad competes with 14
other teams. The league consists of a
majority of SWC schools, several
smaller schools and is divided into
three conferences with two divi
sions in each conference. The Aggie
team is in the Northern conference,
along with LeToumeau, Stephen F.
Austin, Texas, SMU, and Baylor.
The squad plays each team in its
conference twice for ten games. The
soccer season lasts from Sept.
21-Nov. 24.
The league is characterized by
stiff competition. Last year’s champ
ion, SMU, won both its playoff
game and championship game in
overtime. SMU, a sanctioned team,
traveled to the NCAA soccer
playoffs to compete with UCLA and
last season’s eventual champion, St.
Louis University.
This year SMU is favored to take
the league crown. They will be hard
to beat with incoming freshmen
such as goaltender Joe Hight, who
was a high school all-American and
toured Germany with a Texas all-
star team.
The A&M squad looks promising
this year because of several standout
freshmen from the soccer-crazed
Dallas area and players from 13
foreign countries. The team’s re
cord stands at 0-0-2 so far after play
ing to standoffs with LeTourneau
and Stephen F. Austin.
Meanwhile, is there a soccer
coach in the house?
