Although the $44,725 budget was
not granted, Don said that the
$40,000 granted was more than
women athletes had seen.
With budgets in the past two
years not over $1,800, the $40,000
will allow for “expansion, change
and a definite turning point,’’ said
Don.
The expansion Don meant was
recruitment of women athletes. Al
though A&M coeds have been
doing this, there has been no or
ganized effort to do so. Materials
will now be available to do a more
efficient and professional job, said
Don.
Without this change, these
women would be headed else
where. “Instead of buying their own
uniforms, food on trips and trans
portation to competition, the
money will provide the girls with
hotel accommodations, university
uniforms and better equipment. ”
The turning point is the general
change in attitude about intercol
legiate sports for women.
. Across the nation, men on uni
versities are faced with the entrance
of women in their sports programs.
A&M entered a woman diver,
Susan Johnston, against men. Div
ing with a broken ankle, she opened
a new chapter in A&M’s book of
athletic 12th men.
The Women’s Athletic Depart
ment is in the Athletic Department
headed by Emory Bellard. “Al
though Miss Don is officially a
member of the Health and Physical
Education Department faculty, she
will be working with the Athletic
Department staff,” said Samson.
This year the Athletic Depart
ment will fund the women’s 10
sports out of its budget.
“There are many sports on this
campus that require more funding
and the Athletic Council plans to set
up a committee to study their prob
lems,” Samson said.
This is a transitional year. The
study will hopefully show a way to
fund sports like men’s soccer, water
polo and rugby, as well as women’s
sports and intramurals.
“It’s not that the Athletic De
partment or the University doesn’t
want to fond these sports, it’s just a
matter of limited resources,” added
Samson.
“The women made a reasonable
request and President Williams said
that it should be funded. When the
time comes to balance the budget,
that problem will be taken care of
then,” Samson said.

Thomas reinstated,
joins ’Skins camp
(AP)—Duane Thomas returned
as a player and presumably starting
fullback for the Washington Reds
kins Tuesday as the result of George
Allen’s “toughest decision ever as a
coach. ” Allen’s reinstatement of the
gifted but tempermental runner
came exactly a week after Thomas
was dismissed because of an alterca
tion with an assistant coach at the
Redskins’ training camp in Carlisle,
Pa.
The rarely contrite Thomas had
met twice with Allen since that inci
dent to apologize and plead for
another chance.
But Allen, despite praising
Thomas for admitting he was wrong,
had agonized over the answer for
five days. He acknowledged over
the weekend he was leaning in
Thomas’ favor, but noted, “Either

way, it’ll be unpopular with a lot of
people.”
Allen informed the team of his
decision shortly before noon, and
Thomas immediately joined prac
tice at the Redskins’ facility near
Dulles International Airport.
It was understood that Allen had
not consulted the players be
forehand. Neither did he discuss
the issue with other coaches except
for backfield Coach Charlie Waller,
whom Thomas had threatened and
shoved at Carlisle.
“Waller was receptive to bringing
Duane back,” Allen said. “Charlie
was for whatever I decided.”
Allen, referring to numbered
notes he had written on a yellow
legal pad, said, “The fact that Duane
wanted to return was the main fac
tor. He said he was sorry and
wanted to be forgiven. He does not
want to play for any other team.
“My first consideration was for
the team,” Allen said.
