Lewis and a Texas A&M University research team have been investigating two metal lic compounds of six- mercaptopurine (6-MP) since 1968. Both compounds were originally synthesized by Dr. Kirschner of Wayne State University said Dr. Lewis. The compounds work against leukemia by reducing the white- blood cell count. “However it is ex tremely toxic to the patient and its use has to be carefully monitored and stopped periodically,” said Lewis. Lewis pointed out that low levels of this toxic 6-MP can be combined with metallo-complexes (platinum, palladium and bismuth) to retard the effects of leukemia and the toxic side effects of 6-MP. The present TAMU reserach should offer clues to the mechanism associated with the relative non-toxicity of the metallo-complexes. Lewis notes in a report to be pre sented to the American Chemical Society on Sept. 10 that the less toxic compound gives similar results on tests involving baby chicks. Pro longed survival of skin transplants and reduction of white blood cell count have been results of the new compound. The testing will now proceed to rats, mice, and other sub-human primates, said Lewis. “We don’t want to make predictions from re sults from just one specie,” he said. Confirmation of Lewis’ tests will promote studies of similar anti leukemia agents possessing poten tial in the treatment of other can- OOOOOOOOO M c LaughlinsJ of corpus christi ooooooooo 317 patricia college station, texas We truly believe that no other men's or ladies'hair stylist in College Station-Bryanisso dedicated to the art of beautiful hair sculpture as McLaughlin’s. 4 y We cost a little more.
