Appointment better method,
says comptroller candidate
On a scale from one to 10, with
Barry Goldwater at zero and
Charles Percy at 10, Nick Rowe,
Republican candidate for state
comptroller, rates himself at three.
Rowe was in College Station
Tuesday for a campaign talk with
members of the local media.
Rowe was a Democrat until the
1972 national convention, after
which he said he could no longer
support the party. He emphasizes
his conservative nature and boasts
of his military background.
The native Texan and West Point
graduate has traveled and written
extensively since his escape in 1968
from a Viet Cong prison camp.
Rowe was assigned to the Defense
Intelligence Agency until his re
tirement in February.
“I believe the office of comptrol
ler must eventually become an ap
pointed professional position.”
Rowe said. This would remove
political pressure from the office, he
said.
’ He said the office has become
removed from public examination
because of the personality of the
man holding office, Robert Calvert.
Rowe said he wants to bring the of
fice “back to the people. ”

GOP candidate links
Briscoe to unions
AUSTIN (AP)—Jim Cranberry,
Republican candidate for governor,
made a new effort Tuesday to pin
the union label on Gov. Dolph Bris-
“It’s the greatest schedule I’ve ever had! But it is going to be
difficult with three classes meeting at the same hour!”
Cranberry also told a news con
ference the governor should have
exerted leadership to keep the Con
stitutional Convention from ad
journing without sending a new
state charter to the voters.
Briscoe, he said, has a “close, in
timate rapport with labor leaders”

Cranberry distributed a sheet en
titled “Chronology: Gov. Briscoe
and Labor” consisting mainly of
newspaper accounts of Briscoe’s ac
tivities with organized labor.
He mentioned that Hubbard cre
dited Briscoe last week with the es
timated $900 million surplus in the
state’s general revenue fund at the
close of the current fiscal year, Aug.
31, 1975.
“This is ridiculous. The surplus
comes mostly as a result of tax re
venue windfalls in an inflationary
spiral, bolstered by federal
revenue-sharing funds. ”
