(AP)— Hundreds of predominantly Puerto Rican demonstrators, who were protesting police actions, hurled stones at City Hall and smashed storefront windows Monday in a second day of disorders. After meeting with two groups of community leaders. Mayor Ken neth Gibson asked Newark’s 400,000 residents Monday night to “voluntarily stay indoors until further notice.” During the meetings, police made two forays into the city’s main street to disperse demonstrators, numbering up to 1,000 persons. The protestors said they were angered by police arrests and handl ing of disorders at a Puerto Rican festival on Sunday. The protesters complained excessive force had been used by police at the disor ders. Some protesters demanded the ouster of Police Director Hubert Wilhams, whom Gibson appointed to the post several months ago. Monday’s trouble came on the heels of a demonstration by about 2,000 persons Sunday night over disorders at a picnic in Branch Brook Park. Two men were shot at the Sunday festival; a 4-year-old girl was tram pled by a policeman’s horse; and several others were hit by flying rocks and bottles. Two police cars, a fire department car and a motorcy cle were burned. Authorities didn’t say what caused the disturbance or who fired the shots, but some police reports indicated the crowd’s anger stem med from gambling arrests at the picnic. Under the new rule, a student can drop his course, regardless of grade, with a Q up until mid-term. He must have the approval of his academic dean.
