Page 4 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1974 Navy pilot a lady BATTALION CLASSIFIED Me Lt. Judy Neuffer says it was all in a day’s work. But that day’s work made her the first female pilot in the Navy’s history to fly into the eye of a hurricane. “She flew like the veteran pilot that she is,” said Cmdr. Dick Sirch who was with Lt. Neuffer on the flight Sunday through the 175 mile-an-hour winds of Hurricane Carmen. Lt. Neuffer said Sirch told her it was one of the roughest centers he’s flown into in three years of hur ricane tracking. “It was plenty rough going in and we came out on the rough side, too,” said Lt. Neuffer, who was copilot on the flight. “We found the winds at 175 miles an hour in the center and it took all the power we had to maintain the heading. ” Lt. Neuffer and Sirch, members of a weather reconnaissance squad stationed at Jacksonville Naval Air Station, flew a four-engine turbop rop plane. A native of Ohio, Lt. Neuffer has been in the Navy for four years and her work as a hurricane tracker re sults from “being in the right place at the right time, ” she said. “I’m not a staunch women’s liberationist,” she said, “but I do believe in equal opportunity. I feel I can do my part by proving that women can be pilots. I’m satisfied in weather reconnaissance and I hope people understand that.” WANT AD RATES One day 50 per word 4ft per word each additional day Minimum charge—75c Claasified Display $1.00 per column inch each insertion FOR RENT HELP WANTED HELP WANTED FOR SALE DEADLINE 3 p.m. day before publication LEGAL NOTICE New brick, spacious, luxury, furnished, carpeted apartment including living room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen with built-in, all-electric RCA Whirlpool appliances, in cluding dishwasher, disposal, oven and vent hood. 15 cu. ft., no frost refrigerator with ice-maker, wood burning fireplace, CA-CH.
