Everything you do before a practice or game would add to prevention, but treatment is a big part of the job.” Trainers are assigned the duty of taping the athletes. Tape is used at the rate of 1800 yards per practice session. Also charged with on-field relief are the trainers. They make ice, cold towels and salt tablets available throughout practice. They also pass out an electrolyte drink during the team’s three work out breaks. As for equipment, the managers have a more lengthy schedule. They must arrive about two hours before practice and four hours before a game to ready the facilities. Fitting pads and issuing equip ment is the pre-workout menu while chasing balls is the chore dur ing practice. After practice, the managers collect the store equip ment, keeping it in good repair. Problems are common, but the nemesis seems to be astroturf shoes. “They wear out so fast, especially in the rain,” Pickard said. “We issued eight or ten new pair of shoes Mon day. ” ic’ll be rei m being iti he said. “I the Wyom: THE ACADEI OF INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY TRAINING REGISTER NOW For FALL SEMESTER STARTING SEPTEMBER 9, 1974 MARY 846- dull tapafi else c/assa ig and (if I. Along with senior managers Al Alexander and Paul Baker, Griffin and Cox oversee their underclass counterparts. Pick ard insists that the group under him work together as a team. “We can’t have too many bosses,” he said. The student managers and trainers have been described as “high school ath letes who for one reason or another can’t compete at the college level and just want to stay close to the sport.” There were about 75 applic ants for this year’s positions by De cember of 1973. Trainers usually have a desire to become licensed and are usually a P.E. or pre-med major. Managers are generally hard workers who are enrolled in just about anything ex cept majors requiring long study hours or labs. Pickard says the university facilities are super with the excep tion of the dressing room. “The dressing room is adequate but it is the worst of our facilities, ” said Pic kard. The room was built in 1948 with a squad of 60 in mind. Pickard now oversees a team of 120. But Pickard does consider the understadium training room a great convenience for therapeutic reasons. Injuries can be treated promptly when necessary. “Right now, ” says Pickard, “we re more interested in that scoreboard and putting more points on the left side than the right. ” BUG F0RMANCE COMPLETE VOLKSWAGEN & FIAT REPAIR • NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY • DISCOUNT PRICES TO AGGIES • SHUTTLE SERVICE MORNINGS ON WELLBORN ROAD AT JERSEY (BEHIND ARNOLD BROS.
