4 l Armadillo stew, extra riding day top cavalry trip Remnants of A&M’s new cavalry unit got more than they bargained for on their 160-mile end-of-school trail ride: an extra day in the saddle and armadillo stew. The armadillo stew was the impromptu contribu tion of Fred Pronger of Stratford, who caught, cleaned and cooked the unfortunate beast which happened to cross the path of the TAM U group as it galloped from San Marcos to Uvalde. “Not bad” was the culinary as sessment of a transplanted Pennsvl- vanian, Army Captain James Hol land, who rode with eight TAMU spring graduates in the ceremonial end for the 1974 version of Parsons Mounted Cavalry. THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JUNE B. 1874 Holland, military science instruc tor, serves as advisor for the all senior unit formed last year as part of TAMU’s Corps of Cadets. The 20-man unit, inspired by early-day cavalry organizations at TAMU, participates in march-ins at football games and has been asked to appear in several parades around the state. The group averaged 10 hours a day in the saddle during the eight- day ride which ended late Sunday afternoon. Original plans called for the spring fling to be over by Satur day. Captain Holland said the riders spent an extra half day at Center Point to rest the horses. They also were delayed when one horse threw ALBERTSONS DRUGS & FOODS SPECIALS GOOD WEDS., THUR., FRI., SAT., JUNE 5, 6, 8, 1974 YOUR MAN IN GOI D FEATURES.. They bunked under the stars and made do with what food they could find or purchase en route. Their route took them along the “Devil’s Backbone” near Wimber- ley, past Canyon Lake and Bandera. In addition to Holland and Pronger, the riders were Bobby Huddleston of Uvalde, Bob Byrnes of San Angelo, Ross McDaow of Columbus, Johnny Becker of San Antonio and Mike Collins, Paul Hess and Pete Dunnam, all of Dallas. Student loan policy change now effective Legislation effective June 2 streamlines the Federal Guaran teed Student Loan Program, and is expected to result in increased par ticipation in the loan program. Currently, a financial needs test is required before a student can qualify to receive federal interest subsidies on a college loan. Under the new law, a student whose adjusted family income is below $15,000 automatically qual ifies for interest benefits on loans up to $2,000 each academic year. If such a student wishes to receive interest benefits on a loan larger than $2,000, he must submit to the lender a recommendation from his school, based on a needs analysis. A student whose adjusted family income is over $15,000 may also qualify for the interest benefits, but he must submit the needs analysis recommendation, regardless of the amount of the loan. For a student who qualifies for the subsidy, the government pays all of the interest on his loan while he is in school, and for up to nine months after he is no longer in school. The student then begins re payment of the loan and begins pay ing the interest from that time. Aggie awarded for best paper Daniel V.
