Art captured on cake
Pictures for sight and taste

Artists claim the true essence iof One artist chose butter, sugar and
art is in the medium, and graceful cream for her medium, and the
strokes on the surface of the picture “canvas” is a piece of sheet cake,
are placed with the feeling and soul Shirley Bracken, an employe of
of the artist. the Food Services Department,
SHIRLEY BRACKEN adds final “strokes” to a still-life picture done
with butter cream icing. She developed her artistic touch through the
use of conventional oils and canvas.
Hot debate seen
on right-to-work
uses her skill developed with paint
and canvas to create works qf art
from confectioner’s ingredients.
One “painting,” her first, was
displayed during a baker’s conven
tion at TAMU. The work depicts a
still life of a pitcher, fruit, and a loaf
of bread.
The most stunning item on the
cake is its “frame, ” ornately adorned
in yellow-gold icing to resemble a
hand-carved gilt enclosure.
“I have done work with oils and
canvas before,” Bracken noted.
“But I’d never done a still life, par
ticularly one with icing. It was a lot
of fun, but it took me a little longer
to do than the average cake. ”
Her tedious work appears to have
taken weeks, but she completed the
job in two hours—a brief time con
sidering the finished product.
Bracken enjoyed her first venture
into pictorial cake decoration so
much that she decided to try
another “picture. ” Her rendering of
a bride standing before a wedding
cake will be preserved for perma
nent display when the bakery sec
tion of the new-Memorial Student
Center is completed.
Braken resides at 207 Fidelity St.
in College Station with her hus
band, Richard, who is waiting for an
opening in TAMU’s College of Vet
erinary Medicine.
Her skill with icing and coloring
should be a boon to those trying to
watch their weight. Although
loaded with calories, her cakes are
literally too pretty to eat.

AUSTIN, Tex.—Some of the
Constitutional Convention’s hottest
debate is yet to come.
Explosive potential of the general
provision article already has been
demonstrated in preliminary
rounds, and the right-to-work sec-

Organized labor, headed by State
AFL-CIO President Harry Hub
bard, stands four-square against
writing right-to-work provisions
into the new constitution.
A new statewide citizens commit
tee with formidable political and fi
nancial muscle has been formed to
lobby for placing right-to-work on
the .ballot as a separate issue from
, tfre overall constitutional revision.
The Texas right-to-work law, dat
ing back to 1947, prohibits union
contracts which would require
union membership as a condition to
getting and keeping a job.
Baylor University President Dr.
Abner McCall is chairman of the
Texas Right-To-Work Committee
which opened offices near the state
capitol recently. Houston school
teacher Mrs. Margaret Wisdom is
the co-chairman.
Other big-name Texans, includ
ing a scattering of i ndustrial leaders,
Republicans, conservative Democ
rats and Gov. Dolph Briscoe’s cam
paign manager, Austin attorney Joe
Kilgore, are on the committee ros
ter.
