THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY. JUNE B. 1974 Page 11' CHAPMAN’S DECORATING CENTER Door ‘always openl says new counselor for women By KATHY YOUNG The Dean of Women’s Office has a new arrival, Karen Switzer, coun selor for women. She is replacing Patricia Self who will return in the fall in a different capacity. Switzer was counselor for women’s residence halls since Oct. 1973. A graduate of Wichita State University in political science and speech, she also holds a masters de gree from Kansas University in communications and human rela tions. Her youthful appearance has re sulted in a few humorous instances as counselor for women’s residence halls. She related one such instance where about 12 p.m. several men approached the slender, smiling brunette who was dressed in very casual clothes. The men invited her SWEET SHOP now featuring Beautiful, Taste Tempting CAKES Made to Order and Deaerated to Suit Your Individual Needs for BIRTHDAYS WEDDINGS And Other Special Occasions Choose a delicious pie or cake from our attractive display and place an order for your next special occasion or call 845-6651 ‘QUALITY FIRST’ to join them in streaking. “I really enjoyed the surprise reaction when I told them I was the women’s counselor and having them realize that if they streaked I would recognize them. It really broke up a lot of the secret plotting to streak,’’ Switzer said. When asked her opinion of streaking she said, “I’m glad it’s over. I hope it is over. Considering the consequences at this university it seems pointless when other ac tions could be suggested for things to do.” On a more serious topic, birth control, Switzer said that “educa tion is essential on campus.” She said she is concerned that students be aware of the information availa ble at the university hospital. “I want the present facilities to be utilized,” she added. She will serve as an advisor to Cap and Gown, CWENS, OPA and Alpha Lamda, all new to her on this campus. “My door is always open and I hope that the Dean of Women’s Of fice would be used by the gals to broaden student activities.” ROBERT HALSELL TRAVEL SERVICE AIRLINE SCHEDULE INFORMATION FARES AND TICKETS DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL t\Ui *«/». CALL 822-3737 1016 Texas Avemie — Bryan Recent program to give two VA counselors to campus Veterans attending A&M will have someone to do their worrying for them, Bart Whatley, veterans benefit counselor at the VA Reg ional Office in Waco, said Monday. Wheels are turning in the Waco facility to comply with a recent program announced by President Nixon which establishes a “VA Man on Campus” program to aid Viet nam era veterans attending TAM U and other colleges and universities across the country. “The ‘VA Man on Campus’ prog ram,” Whatley explained, “will provide a full-time VA representa tive for every 500 vets on campus. These representatives will be able to generate required paperwork for lost checks, benefit application, and other actions formerly left to the in dividual veteran.” Since TAMU registered more than 1,000 veterans—mostly from the Vietnam era—two full-time rep resentatives will be installed on campus to answer questions and complete forms for Aggie vets. Whatley noted the Veteran’s Administration is currently in the process of hiring more than 1,300 persons—themselves Vietnam veterans—to fill the positions on the nation’s campuses. “We don’t know exactly when the representatives will be activated at Texas A&M,” Whatley said. “Fol lowing personnel selection, the rep resentatives will be sent to Georgia and Washington for special school ing, then office space and clerical assistance will have to be provided for them.” The program means that Aggie [lent ho* CORDIALLY INVITES YOU. .TO COME JOIN US FORA (2? ■ jfi ■ p i I?
