By MIKE KOLAR 1 lie advertisement says that Kawasaki makes the good times roll. And now, they’re making the good times a little safer. Motorcycles have long had a bad image with the general public. Now, motorcycle companies have joined together with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation to produce a new image for the motorcyclist and his pastime. The motorcycle rider has long been looked down upon,’ said Jim Smith. Smith, a native of New York, is currently setting up a motorcycle instruction course at the Texas A&M Annex for Kawasaki motorcycles, the Motorcycle Safety Institute and the Safety Education Program of A&M. The program has three main ob jectives. “The things we want to do here are train teachers, conduct .workshops and projects and develop a curriculum for learning,” Smith said. “Kawasaki is interested in impro ving the image of motorcycles and making motorcycles safer to ride,” Smith said. “According to a survey made by the University of North Carolina, sixty per cent of all motor cycle traffic accidents occur during the first six months of a rider’s oper ational life. A surprising amount of accidents occur on the way home from the dealer or on the first trip out. This comes from a rider’s inabil ity to ride the cycle properly or from his trying tricks. Through a joint effort by the three institutions, a course has been set up on an abandoned runway at the AStM Annex. The course consists of straights, turns, circles, tight turns, hazards and road tracks. The course is designed to turn almost anyone into a complete motorcycle rider. On the track, the motorcyclist will be faced with almost any hazard that can be expected on the road, from a gravel pit, to a slippery road surface to pot holes. Dr. Jack K. Weaver, director of the Safety Education Program, worked with Smith in the creation of the motorcycle course and range. Kawasaki funded the range in order to help with motorcycle safety.
