A&M’s baseball team may have fallen to second place
in the Southwest Conference race, but three individuals
have sights on league-leading statistics.
Jim Bratsen, Jim Hacker and Paul Miller are among
the SWC’s leading and most feared hitters. There is good
reason.
Bratsen has 24 hits in his last 11 games. The Aggie
first baseman is hitting .377 in conference action. During
that 11-game stretch, Bratsen has scored 14 runs and has 22
RBIs. Bratsen’s 26 conference RBIs is just two short of
David Chalk’s record set in 1970.
Hacker is leading the loop with a .453 average. He set
the conference record for doubles against Houston two
weeks ago.
Miller’s average fell to .412 after a strained elbox
hampered his swing against Tech. His average is good for
the No. 2 sport in SWC circles.
These are not the only feared hitters in the A&M
lineup. Seven Aggie regulars are hitting over .300 with three
over .400. A&M’s team batting average of .350 is also on a
record setting pace. Texas currently holds the mark with a
.333 average in 1971.
Bratsen has little or no explanation for his wild
hitting streak.
“I hope no one wakes me up,” Bratsen said. “I just
seem to be getting the hits.”
Bratsen said he wasn’t getting the good pitches early
in the year but the hot bat of Al Thurmond forced enemy
pitchers to throw strikes to Bratsen.
“When Thurmond was hitting the ball I started
hitting too and got my confidence up,” Bratsen said.
Not utilizing speed
Miller and Hacker rank among the teams fastest
runners and wish the Ags utilized the speed to better
advantage.
“I think we could steal a few more bases,” said
Hacker. “We haven’t found many catchers that could
constantly throw us out at second. Miller agrees.”
Both Hacker and Miller are students of the game.
They want to know why certain strategies are used and why
other moves fail.
“We’re not a good bunting team,” said Hacker, “so
we need to make up for it by being smarter base runners.”
Miller is the lead off hitter but still has 23 RBIs. “I
love to hit lead off,” said Miller, “and with the designated
hitter rule I have lots of people on base in front of me cause
the pitcher doesn’t make the last out.”
Aggie pitching has been shaky of late but both seniors

After giving up 66 runs in the last six games, Clint
Thomas and Perry Arthur held the Raiders to two earned
runs in Sunday’s doubleheader.
“Everyone was worried about the pitching after
Houston,” said Hacker, “but after we got two good
performances in Lubbock everyone was at ease.”
“It’s hard to win on the road,” the Aggie third sacker
said, “except when you play Texas. Everyone is so high for
that series it doesn’t make much difference where you play
it.”
Miller said the pitching is not a major worry now and
everyone is just thinking about Rice. A&M entertains the
Owls Friday and Saturday on Kyle Field.
“No matter if we go to Austin one game up, one
game down or even, the team that wins 2 of 3 will win the
conference,” Hacker said. “That’s the way it should be.”
