NEW YORK (-flP)—Lydia is a
suburban housewife with three
grown children. She says she loves
her husband, but she loves a wo
man, too.
Don is a 30-year-old bachelor
who says that men and women
are equally attractive to him. He
has had affairs with both.
Lydia and Don and hundreds
of other people today call them
selves bisexual. To Don it means
“to be able to seek out a sex and
love partner totally on the basis
of human feeling as opposed to
gender.”
Bisexuality has become a hot
topic these days. Many shrug it
off as a fad, but psychiatrists de
bate the lifestyle as intensely as
they do homosexuality.
No matter what the profession
al opinion, certain notables past
and present have espoused and
declared their bisexuality, includ
ing Alexander the Great, Napo
leon, Julius Caesar—of whom it
is said, “He was every woman’s
man and every man’s woman.”
This generation’s proponents in
clude feminist Kate Millett, rock
star David Bowie, actress Maria
Schneider, star of “Last Tango
in Paris,” and the late Janis Jop
lin.
A group called Bisexual Liber
ation has chapters in five states
claims more than 1,000 members
and holds monthly workshops and
dances. One founder, Don Fass,
says that bisexuality is “an al
ternate lifestyle I enjoy and it’s
good for me.”
Some see bisexuality as a di
rect outgrowth of gay liberation
and the women’s movement.
John Paul Hudson, a New York
psychologist writing a book about
bisexuality, says, “Through the
women’s movement, women value
each other more instead of think
ing themselves inferior. They also
see that man is not the be-all and
end-all of existence and that he
is even expendable as far as
sexual pleasure is concerned. Gay
lib has helped men to deal with
chauvinist attitudes and many
more men are honoring the homo
sexuality in their make-up.”
And there are those who doubt
that there is any such thing as
bisexuality.
“I just don’t think there are
too many true bisexuals around,”
said Charles Silverstein, a psychi
atrist who is gay. “I think a bi
sexual is a homosexual who’s
afraid of commitment. And a ho
mosexual going through the rit
ual of sex with a woman is not
a bisexual.”
Dr. Wardell Pomeroy, a psy
chiatrist who worked with Dr.
Alfred Kinsey, believes there are
true bisexuals—he prefers to call
them “pansexuals, people who
have the capacity to develop sex
ually in many different ways.”

Nixon 9 s reception
(Continued from page 1)
beans and sugar beets are the
principal providers, Nixon prom
ised to send federal energy chief
William E. Simon to try to allevi
ate local fertilizer shortages.
And in Saginaw, he reempha
sized to a predominantly white
audience his opposition to school
busing and to any interference
with local schools.
He greeted Air Force Capt.
Robert Abbott of Deckerville,
Mich., and said: “For the first
time in 12 years we have peace.
For the first time in 25 years not
one young American is being
drafted. Every American is home
where he belongs, not in a prison
camp in Hanoi.”
There were demonstrators at
every stop, particularly in San
dusky. They waved placards with
such legends as “Impeach the
Thief,” “Nixon Coddles Crimi
nals,” and “Jail to the Thief.”
In Saginaw, as Nixon leaned
from the top of his white Buick
convertible to shake hands with
well-wishers, protesters behind
them began shouting “Pay Your
Taxes.” The car speeded up as
it passed the booing section of the
crowd.
After the trip. Senate Majority
Whip Robert P. Griffin, R.-Mich.,
said he believed the trip would
help Sparling, who is opposed by
Democrat J. Robert Traxler. He
said it was bound to increase the
voter turnout in an area where
a heavy turnout normally would
favor a Republican.
State Republican Chairman
William McLaughlin, who earlier
had been dubious about the value
of the trip, called it “fabulous—
nothing but a plus.”
“It’s got to help us in the
campaign,” he said.
Sparling carefully avoided
either praise or censure in his
remarks.
Before the motorcade began,
he told a reporter: “Nixon is
not here as a campaigner. He’s
here to address himself to the
issues.”
Traxler, a state representative,
has said that Nixon and his
record are the only issues in his
campaign. He said he believed
Nixon’s visit helped him.
Nixon alluded to that when he
noted at Cass City that Sparling
“is not just against, but for.”
The Thumb, named because it
sticks up like a thumb from the
rest of the state, has been de
scribed as so heavily Republican
that a Democratic candidate for
governor in the 1930’s who came
from the area could manage only
two votes from the 2,000 residents
of his home town.
As Nixon returned to Wash
ington, Press Secretary Ronald
L. Ziegler said Nixon “was very
pleased” by reaction he received.
Town Hall choices
(Continued from page 1)
Thorpe pointed out that there
was actually very little chance
the performers could be signed
for the dates requested but the
recommendations were made as
a priority listing for MSC Pro
grams Coordinator Hal Gaines to
aid in his selection of the per
formers.
“We feel this list provides a
very good perspective for the
program we want,” said Thorpe.
“This should give him (Stark) a
good idea of what’s going on.”
Deadline extension
